Some of those programs about animals and nature are hard for me to watch. I enjoy them until they have to go and include the part that rips my heart out.......in nature, animals die. Can't they just leave that part out? I know they have to die, but I'd rather not watch it. I was enjoying March of the Penguins, until.....well, if you saw it you know what I'm talking about. I have the same problem watching Wild Kingdom. Do you remember The Land Before Time? I know death is part of life, but I would rather sit through a program like that without going through a box of tissues.
So I didn't take this incident very well either.......
This morning I had to watch it.......the death of a little creature......one that had become a familiar part of my day. Some of you may have read my post, A Great Way To Start The Day In Helena AL. In it I have a picture of a duck family....the mama and her six ducklings that I have enjoyed seeing each morning when I walk. This morning I saw them again, but one was in trouble, struggling in the water while the others looked on. I could not figure out a way to save the duck and I had that dreadful, helpless feeling. I couldn't believe this was happening. When I realized there was nothing I could do and had to accept the inevitable, I wanted to leave and go back home. I felt my eyes start to tear up, but I kept going, sniffling and wiping my eyes as I continued walking and tried to get over the shock of it. By the time I got around the lake the other ducks had swam (swum?) to one of their favorite spots on the lake and were enjoying their morning bath, going on with life. I, on the other hand, was not quite there yet.

My favorite way to start my day is a three mile walk around the lake at Joe Tucker Park in Helena. I enjoy the exercise but I particularly enjoy the entertainment provided by the local wildlife! Here are a few photos.......
Helena was voted by CNN Money Magazine as one of the Top 100 Best Places To Live in 2007.

This is a family of ducks that I have been watching since the little ones were just little fuzzy things. By the time I took this picture they had grown quite a bit. They all look like their mom now, I can't tell them apart, but they still do everything as a family.
TOO CUTE!

There are LOTS of Canada Geese! They are fun to watch as they fly in and land on the water. There is one Daddy Goose, and there he is in the center of this photo although it's hard to tell much about him with his backside to the camera. He thinks he's in charge and keeps an eye on all the lady geese. They all chose to ignore me this morning.

Now this is something I don't see everyday! It's not unusual for there to be one or two people sitting by the lake with a fishing pole. I had no idea there was anything like this out there! This big catfish got a lot of attention that morning!
