Here is a positive story for you all. One of my RE/MAX colleagues, Denny Friesen received a floor call a few months ago from an elderly gentleman who wanted to sell his home. After chatting with him on the phone for some time he drove over to the property to do a CMA. What he found was a man who was "trapped" in his own home. Aparently over some time this man's home had been overrun with drug dealers and squatters and because of his age and small stature was unable to fend them off.
Denny took a look at the home, which had been destroyed, priced it properly, and got it sold within 2 weeks. So far a typical Realtor transaction, however, Denny didn't stop there. He helped the gentleman find a proper senior care home and worked with the bank on putting his money in a high interest account. He paid for 2 giant garbage bins to be delieverd to the property and enlisted the services of myself, another Realtor Wayne Temple, and a friend Paul. The four of us cleaned out the entire house from top to bottom. Garbage that was piled waste high, food rotting in the kitchen and closets. Endless amounts of needles. On a few occations I had to leave the house to get some fresh air because my lunch almost came up. Thankfully the people who are buying the house are gutting it.
Now this elderly gentleman could have paid for this stuff on his own. He could have afforded to hire people to come and clean out his house. But Denny saw a man who was confused, scared and didn't know what to do and he took it upon himself to take care of him. As of 2 days ago he is in his new care facility, and the police have arrested one of the squatters who took over his house.
I would like to give thanks to Denny for his kindness and for showing compassion to someone that needed help. For going above his "fiduciary" duty.

We had a solid day of meetings with all the BC Real Estate Boards Presidents. There were many topics of interest, most of which involve the individual Boards and their members. We did however, discuss the HST and it seems there isn't much we can do. It's coming to BC regardless and the government doesn't seem to want to negotiate with us. At the end of the day there are some changes that can be made that could make this less of an impact on British Columbians. One, they could put the threshold up to $500,000 instead of $400,000. They could change the $20,000 rebate to a 4% rebate. They could also start to eliminate the Property Transfer Tax to help offset even more tax.
So with that, we need all Real Estate agents to talk to their client base and have them log onto the BCREA site and send the pre-written letter into the government. It is easy, takes only a few seconds and hopefully with enough support the government will feel some pressure to take a serious look at these issues. I'll provide a link to the site below. Cut and paste it into emails to your clients. It's also a great issue to discuss if you send out mailers to your clients. Let's get them involved. Let's get noticed. Let's get the government talking seriously about this.
Here is the site.

Monday and Tuesday are the president's meeting in Vancouver. We will be discussing such issues as the HST, education and some other hot topics. I have to be honest the last president's meeting wasn't very useful, so I am hoping this one will be a little better. I'm not a big fan of having meetings just to have meeting. I prefer a little meat to the discussion, other wise it would be better left to an email exchange.
I will blog when I return on what we accomplished.
