During his State of the State address on January 6, 2010, Governor Schwarzenegger unveiled a jobs initiative package intended to create 100,000 new jobs in California. The California Jobs Initiative includes a proposal to extend the state's $10,000 tax credit for California residents purchasing new (never previously occupied) homes and to expand it to include existing home purchases by first-time homebuyers.

Under current law, the tax credit technically expires on March 1, 2010, although only $100 million in credits are authorized and that amount was officially exhausted as of August 31, 2009. This is all relatively old news. The newer news is that the Governor's proposed extension/expansion is now included in a bill by Assemblymember Kevin Jeffries that is part of the special legislative session that was convened in response to the fiscal emergency declared by the Governor on January 8, 2010.
