A meeting will be held on November 19, 2009 at 7 PM at the Carriage House in Rockwood Park on Washington St. Extension to discuss a New Castle County Department of Special Services sewer rehabilitation project which is scheduled to begin in late 2010.
If your home in North Wilmington is to be affected, you have probably received a letter notifying you of the meeting. The interesting part about this notice is that it will have a picture of your house and markers showing where the rehabilitation will be located. I received a notice, and it says that at no cost to the homeowner, the County will line the pipe with a new cured in place pipe liner. The liner will form a new water tight pipe inside the existing lateral reducing leakage, resisting roots, and extending the life of the service lateral. The county will install the liner from the County sewer line to a point between the sewer and the existing cleanout, with no excavation required. This will be good news for those of us who have been fighting tree roots for years. The old sewer lines are terra cotta, and even if you have replaced the line on your property with PVC, as I have, the roots get in where they meet the sewer at the street.
Wow, I went outside and took a picture at dusk to celebrate, and rather than looking down in the ground, I looked up in the trees at the beautiful sky!

A charming piece of history is the Historic Greenbank Mill in Wilmington, DE. It dates back to at least to the 1760s and it is thought to be the site of an old Swedish Mill before the present mill was built. The Swedish mill is believed to date back to 1677. The Mill was devastated by fire set by arsonists in 1969 and then rebuilt. A group known as The Greenbank Mill Associates worked extremely hard at getting the mill restored. It was again ravaged in 1999, this time by Hurricane Floyd. The waterwheel had to be replaced amongst many other major repairs. It was again flooded in Sept. of 2003 in a storm that caught the New Castle County area by surprise. This time there was not nearly the damage that was done by Floyd. There were many volunteers that helped in the cleanups and repairs to this area treasure.
The Historic Greenbank Mill in Wilmington, DE operated for nearly three centuries. It produced flour, textiles and eventually became a woodworking mill producing anything from chairs to ladders. Other than fire and floods, the mill went through many trying times. After the woodworking mill went out of business it was sold at Sheriff Sale and eventually turned into a gristmill and feed business in 1925. Below right is a recent photo of the water wheel which was replaced after the devastation by Hurricane Floyd. There is so much history here and across the Delaware Valley that you'll never run out of things to see!
Tours of the mill are available on the weekends. You can see how the restoration was done, experience the textile mill and learn more about the Philips house and the farm behind the mill.
The Historic Greenbank Mill in Wilmington, DE has an interesting neighbor known as the Wilmington & Western Railroad which is directly across the road. Back in the day, the Wilmington & Western Railroad traveled from Landenberg, PA and through Hockessin, DE hauling goods from the mills along the Red Clay Creek and out to the Port of Wilmington. There's plenty to see and learn about there as well and it's right across the street!
The historic Greenbank Mill in Wilmington, DE is a treat for the whole family and so is the Wilmington & Western Railroad!
Lots to see and do in New Castle County, Delaware and also nearby Pennsylvania! If you're thinking of a move to the area check out some local real estate!

An interesting piece of history that is still alive and active is the Wilmington and Western Railroad in southwest Wilmington, DE. It dates back to the 1860s when it was chartered to move supplies back and forth between the mills on the Red Clay Creek to the Port of Wilmington. It ran all the way from Landenberg, PA to the riverfront. Today it is still running and is a wonderful attraction for the whole family. It runs from the Greenbank Station at Prices Corner out to Mt. Cuba in Greenville where it stops long enough that you can have a picnic. There's a beautiful view of the Red Clay Creek and a park like area where you can relax at the Mt. Cuba stop.
Some of the typical events they offer are the Mt. Cuba Express as mentioned above, the Hockessin Express where the train stops in Hockessin, DE for a half hour layover. The Hockessin Express is quite a bit longer than the Mt. Cuba Express. They also offer a Mother's Day Brunch, Hayride Express, Wild West Robbery, Back Burner Dinner Train and MANY more special events! It's a gorgeous ride especially in the fall of the year. You can even charter the train for Birthday Parties, Weddings or whatever YOUR special event may be! The Wilmington and Western Railroad cabooses are great for kids birthday parties and they are even available during the off season. The station also has it's own museum. The Wilmington and Western Railroad has a lot to offer and they are always looking for volunteers. If you like trains and history it's perfect thing to do!
The Wilmington and Western Railroad experience is really like you are in a different era of the 19th Century and the ride is so unique especially from the viewpoint of the train. Enjoy the views of the historic Wooddale Covered Bridge, the beautiful Red Clay Creek, Brandywine Springs Park and lots more as you travel through the beautiful and scenic Delaware countryside. Take your family or just yourself and enjoy a relaxing and beautiful trip back in time on the Wilmington and Western Railroad. There's lots to do for the whole family in the Wilmington area! If you're considering a move to the area check out the real estate!
