U.S. NEWS & WORLD magazine features lots of lists. They are no different than most publications. Their lists include healthiest places, brainiest places, outdoorsiest places, greenest places, etc. I am sure you see a pattern here. If not, check out their main list page.

I was bit surprised to read this morning's Florida Today newspaper front page and see Cocoa, Florida listed as one of the best places (actually one of 10 affordable cities for retirees) to retire.

While every location has its strengths I am not not surprised a city from this area was chosen, after all it borders my home area (Rockledge and Viera) which I believe are among the most desireable and affordable places to live in Florida!

All the things that make Cocoa so desirable (plus a few more) are the things that make Viera and Rockledge so popular! Lets see...

• Climate (average January about 61, July about 81)
• Affordable housing (even newer construction in Viera can be found well under $200,000!)
• Recreation (beaches, golf, boating, fishing, cruises, etc)
• Cultural attractions
• Availability of quality health care facilities (Health First is constructing a new hospital in Viera)
• Proximity to Orlando (40 miles)
• Excellent schools, colleges

If you are considering a move to Florida's Space Coast, consider the central Brevard County communities of Viera and Rockledge (and Cocoa). Viera has several 55+ communities including the very popular Heritage Isle development as well as Indian River Colony Club and Grand Isle. This weekend Cocoa Village in Brevard County will host the Mardi Gras.

There will be a street party tonight and a parade with floats. The fun begins at 5:00tonight. There will be bands , food and lots of drinks.

There will be a beauty pageant for kids.

This year they have tried to make the event more 'children' friendly than in years past. There will be pet rescue groups, the Humane Society will be there and there will be street vendors, THis year there will be carnival rides.

days of amusements. The addition of a carnival and daytime activities cater to kids and families, while the street party, which goes on late into the evening, is more for adults.

Dogs are welcomes, on leashes of course and they can participate in a costume parade.

There will also be a special masquerade party for $18 in advance. Tickets can be purchased at the Cocoa Civic.

Now, I'm sure that our Mardi Gras will pale in comparison to the real Mardi Gras in that John Walters' told us about in Louisiana.

But, I think it will be a great time for all.

These photos are the Space Shuttle Discovery blasting off today as seen from Cocoa Village in Brevard County Florida. We had a dilemma trying to decide where to view the space shuttle launch from. Even though we have been watching launches since the early 1960's, we still get excited watching them today. The space shuttle can be seen from most places in Brevard County, but today we were in a hurry.

Discovery Takes Off With Perfect Weather and Was Spectacular To Watch From Cocoa Village

Running out of time, we stopped at 200 Brevard Avenue in Cocoa Village. There are many benefits in having a commercial real estate listing in Brevard County, and this was one of those times. As you can see from the photos, we had a perfect spot to watch Discovery make history again.

Last night was filled with laughter, and music while some of my family and friends went to Historical Cocoa Village. The rest of the family and friends that couldn't come with were jealous! We all gathered at Murdock's Bistro and Char Bar located 600 Brevard Avenue. My Dad has been a musician my entire life, and his band was playing at Murdock's. We arrived early to beat the crowd as Murdock's is very popular.

The Midnight Wind band entertained everyone there all night. For more history, photos, and future performance dates visit The Midnight Wind. You can also read more about my Dad's accomplishments there, as you can tell I am very proud of him! He once played and toured with the original group Don Love and the Heartbeats in the 1950's and 60's. He is still going strong and doing what he loves, making people happy. Cocoa Village is rich in history and has many wonderful things to do ,and night. Do yourself a favor and visit Historic Downtown Cocoa Village sometime, you'll be glad you did. You might even run in to the Midnight Wind, and my Dad, the leader of the band!
