An interesting story in the Maui News the other day shed a lot of light on the connection between China and Maui back in the day of Sun Yat-sen. It was quite a surprise to me that Keokea Maui was a hot bed of Chinese revolutionary activity over a hundred years ago. There is a Sun Yat-sen Memorial Park which has been blessed with recent upgrades from visiting representatives. Read all about it in the Maui News.

People in Kula have their preference as to where they like to live, but here are some places to consider:

  • Ulupalakua Ranch is known for its rolling hills and fresh Maui wine; it is worth the drive in the morning or afternoon to watch the changing of the guard, as the sky is alive with a transforming array of colors.
  • Keokea is a quiet community offering a peaceful life and is out of the flow of traffic.
  • Kula 200 is a quiet neighborhood with easy access to schools and shopping.

When I first arrived in Maui (back in the early 70′s) Kula was one of the first places I called home and it was mostly cattle that you had for neighbors. Things have changed a bit, but Kula is still a beautiful place to call home. You really need to explore for yourself and find what suits you best, or give me a call; I would love to help you find that perfect home.

My clients were looking on the market for that perfect home in Kula. I found them this home (below) that was not active on the market in Kula 200 earlier this year. I really liked the finishing in this lovely home. The kitchen was totally remodeled, as was the living room. Back up against ranch lands, this property offers scenic crater views, and peace and quiet. This home closed at $1,250,000, which was a great value for Kula 200. The nene geese in Haleakala National Park are so tame that I got some pretty good footage of them when hiking through the crater last month.  These 2 were just hanging out at the cabin hoping for a handout, but the rules say NO feeding the geese.  

The nene goose is endemic to Hawaii and is only found on Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii.  They are endangered and need to be protected.  Can you tell that they have evolved from the Canada Goose?  The markings are quite similar.

The Auwahi Wind Energy project has been approved by the Maui Planning Commission. The wind farm will build and operate 8 wind turbines on Ulupalakua Ranch lands, providing energy for thousands of Maui homes. The power generated will be sold to Maui Electric Company under a 20 year contract. Construction should begin in the spring, with completion expected around December 2012. The project will be sensitive to historical and archeological artifacts which they encounter.
