Conveniently located just off of State Road 49 in Chesterton, Coffee Creek Watershed Preserve is both an amazingly peaceful spot for a picnic or a nature walk and a nature photographers paradise.
Carefully planted with native foliage and wildflowers, it is also sprinkled with genius landscaping, rockscaping and engineered structures that include bridges, waterfalls, ponds and walking paths.
The main structural showpiece is an outdoor ampitheater that offers incorporated leveled seating and sits above the largest and most breathtaking waterfall in the preserve.
My girls and I were recently invited to picnic here with my family. At first, I was hesitant to go, as my girls aren't really the picnicing type - especially in such a peaceful spot. To my amazement, the girls embraced to the peacefulness of the spot and enthusiastically took it all in. They were even very patient with me as I indulged my obsession with the macro setting on my camera.
I truly believe that words cannot describe such a beautiful place. I will simply show you in the photos I was able to shoot that day.
As the foliage is destined to change with the season, I'm looking forward to going back and seeing the changes as they take place...and getting more photos.

Dear Friend, | |
When I was a kid growing up, my buddies and I all lived within a few blocks of each other. In the summer we always somehow showed up at the park every morning at the same time, bikes converging from every direction. We'd play ball, breaking for lunch, paper routes and dinner, but return and play until dark - sometimes taking the game under the streetlights. We didn't have watches. If one of us got hurt, we'd go to the nearest boy's house and his mom would patch us up. We'd leave our bikes in our backyards; we never heard of a wheel lock. We had trees we climbed. The girls chalked out hopscotch patterns on the sidewalk. If someone's parents got a new Chevy, we'd all be there, sniffing in the new car smell and marveling at the design. It was a simpler time. Some people believe it was a better time. Of course, it was in many ways, and here's what made it different. We lived in a neighborhood, not a subdivision. And that meant we had neighbors - people who knew us and whom we knew. We could walk to the store. We sat on a front porch with the folks from next door and talked. Nobody minded if we played "kick the can" in the street. The back door to most people's homes was left unlocked. The Village in Burns Harbor was created to recapture that essence, that feeling, that time. Of course, the great advantage we have is being able to take what was unique and worthwhile about yesterday and meld it with what is great from today: modern, superbly constructed homes, designed with a practicality that maximizes efficiency of space, built with the finest materials and most contemporary technology. And we're building them in a neighborhood that we hope will inspire the same conviviality, the same neighborliness, that made my youth so wonderful. Welcome to The Village in Burns Harbor. We hope you will consider this place "Your New Hometown."
