Story by: Philip Herbert Losey Senior (Principal Broker ERA Home Towne Realty and Auction)

The Somerset Lake Cumberland area is one of the greatest places in the United States to live. Lake Cumberland is a centrally located area that features everything a retiree or person looking for the good life could possibly ask for. The county offers a wide range of possibilities, including nature and outdoor activities, recreation, beautiful modestly-priced homes, low taxes, and a cost of living that is really low.

Pulaski County, the heart of the Somerset-Lake Cumberland area, is located in South Central Kentucky about forty miles from the Tennessee border. It is close to several mid-size cities, including Lexington and Knoxville. Lexington is only eighty miles away.

The County, while keeping a rural atmosphere, has all the amenities of many much larger areas. Somerset, the main city, serves as a hub for the 14 surrounding counties. Lake Cumberland Hospital is one of the best in the state with many outstanding physicians, including great specialists that provide outstanding health care. Somerset, also, features outstanding restaurants, great shopping, and all the services of a much larger city.

As far as recreational activities, the Lake Cumberland area has one of the largest man-made lakes in the world. The Lake Cumberland features four major marinas and miles and miles of scenic boating and fishing areas. If camping or hiking is your forte, parts of Pulaski County border the Daniel Boone National forest with all types of nature-related activities. Scenic views of nature include: Bea Rock, Short Creek the shortest creek in the U. S.) and Buck Creek ( the longest creek in the U. S.), Natural Arch, just outside the County, as well, and the well-known Cumberland Falls.

Pulaski County's terrain and typography runs from hills in the East to flat, rolling land in the West. Pulaski is known as a knob county, called this for the colorful knob hills that occur throughout the middle part of the County.

What's really neat about the County is all the great homes that are available at prices that are so reasonable. It's not just the downturn that has produced a buyer's market; Pulaski County, historically, has had modest home prices. Prices on any type of home, per square foot, are always reasonable. The good thing about our home market is that homes never make the drastic drop like they have in some parts of the Country. So, that what you buy holds its value, so you can always get a good bargain here.

In general, the living is easy here. Property taxes are low compared to most of the nation. Prices, in general, are better than most places. Traffic and crime are low compared to the national average. Our school system offers a quality education. If your taste runs to private schools, we have a great new one in town.

I have lived here for nearly 63 years and sold real estate a good part of that time. I can tell you that a lot of people I have helped find a home here have reported to me later that they are very happy with their decision to come here.

5 pounds of meat, 1.5 cups of white sugar, 1 teaspoon brown sugar, 5 tablespoons salt, 1 oz liquid smoke, 2 teaspoons garlic powder, 1 tablespoon seasoning salt, 1 teaspoon pepper. You can use a dehydrator or hang on the oven rack with tooth picks. Enjoy, works with other meats also.
