Triathlon Training: Coming Down the Home Stretch

In early May, I made the decision to participate in the 2011 Danskin Triathlon in Webster, MA. This is an annual event that draws thousands of women around New England. It is a huge fund raiser for breast cancer research, and also celebrates those who are survivors of cancer. Women of all ages and abilities join in to challenge themselves.

This triathlon consists of a 1/2 mile swim, 12 mile bike, and 3 mile run. This is considered a Sprint triathlon, the shortest of various triathlon races.

My race is on July 24, and that means this week is the home stretch. This is one of the most difficult parts of training, because you are supposed to rest your body in preparation for the race. Light workouts are advised; however, the temptation is to ramp up the training in the hopes of gaining a little extra strength and speed.

I came late to the training this year, and with only two solid months of preparation under my belt, I'm just starting to feel like I've established a solid baseline for the race. So it will be slow and steady for me; if I can finish somewhere between 90 and 120 minutes, I'll be doing great. Wish me luck!

Triathlon Training is Under Way

I recently made a commitment to participate in a triathlon. This is a decision that has to be made every spring, and it has been a couple of years since I last participated in a triathlon. The race that I like best is held each July at Webster Lake in Central Massachusetts. It is put on by Danskin, it is for women only, and it serves as a fantastic fundraiser for breast cancer research.

The Danskin Triathlon is what is known as a sprint triathlon. It consists of a half-mile swim, 12 mile bike, and 5K run. This is the shortest of triathlon races. Participating in this triathlon requires planning and training, and since the race is only two months away, many participants are well into their training program. I started training late and so my goal is to simply finish the race. It will be tortoise speed for me, but that is okay.

One of the greatest challenges for me is not the training or the race, it is the time commitment. Triathlon training occurs during the busiest time of year for real estate in Massachusetts, and there is no option to give up my business in order to train for the race. So I have to plan my time carefully and simply do whatever I am capable of doing on race day. It's an exhilarating experience, and well worth the sacrifice.
