I love to hunt for treasures at antique stores, flea markets or any of the Re-stores. The Community Forklift (love that name!) in Edmonston, MD (greater Hyattsville area) is similar to the Habitat for Humanity® in its mission - DON'T DUMP, DONATE!

It's a win-win for everybody - less material ends up in the landfills, donations are tax deductible, communities are uplifted and the character of historic homes can be preserved through the use of donated, salvaged materials. The Community Forklift carries new green materials (sustainable harvested lumber, low VOC paints for example), surplus materials and salvaged materials. You can find anything from sinks, cabinets, granite & marble, wood-flooring, ceramic tile, appliances ... or a true treasure like an antique vent cover or kitchen utensil, an odd-sized window, character-rich door or the antique piece of molding that is hard to find somewhere else!

Community Forklift is located at 4671 Tanglewood Dr in Edmonston, MD 20781. They are open year-round but hours change - check their website before you go.

You can drop off donations at the store or arrange for a free home pick-up service but you want to find out first which items are accepted (some change based on stock). The Community Forklift also gladly accepts monetary donations to support their mission and welcomes volunteers!

Many of you know that I implemented a $150 Donation to Charity with every closing in 2010.

This was harder to stick to this year because business was quite slow early in the year and the dollar amounts of commissions has gotten smaller and smaller and home prices have fallen. It was also a difficult year for me personally with lots of loss of friends and family members and my mother's illness.

However, I am proud that I have stuck to this and look forward to what interesting charities my clients will choose at the close of each sale.

Following the successful closing of 1771 Countrywood Court, Hyattsville MD I am proud to say that the following donation has been made:

$150 to Avon Walk for Breast Cancer

My client is walking in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in May 2012 and I was very happy to be able to support her.

Breast cancer touches so many lives that I am happy to be able to contribute to help find new treatment options.

I live in fear of breast cancer as I have watched many people I love battle this disease:

• My paternal grandmother passed away from breast cancer in 1974. I never got the chance to meet her.
• Last year my childhood friend passed away at age 37.
• This summer my aunt Susan passed away.
• This October my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and I went home to be with her as she was recuperating from her mastectomy. She has been lucky because the cancer was caught early and she does not need chemotherapy at this time.

Beginning in January 2010 I implemented Pay It Forward - $150 donation to charity with every closing.

Following the successful closing of 872 Nalley Road, Hyattsville MD I am happy to report that the following donations have been made:

• $50 to the UMBC - UMBC is part of the University of Maryland system. When I first moved to America it was to attend this wonderful university and I have always been grateful for my wonderful experience there.

• $40 to Angie Houtz Memorial Fund - This fund provides scholarships to students attending Maryland public universities who have shown a committment to academics and community service

This charitable donation is rapidly becoming one of my favorite pats of the real estate transaction. I am excited to be able to make these donations and I look forward to making many more donations in the coming months (and years).

Hyattsville, MD

Named for its founder, Christopher Clark Hyatt, Hyattsville, Maryland is a small but fascinating town in Prince George’s County. You’ll soon see that this is a town that is quite proud of its interesting heritage while providing a contemporary and comfortable place for those who seek a home of distinction within the realm of Maryland real estate.

History

Christopher Hyatt purchased his first parcel of land in this area in March of 1845, believing that its proximity to the telegraph and railroad would make an excellent place for a town. Shortly thereafter, the town of Hyattsville took shape. By 1859, the town of Hyattsville was a reality.

In addition to this history, Hyattsville boasts a historic district that includes numerous 1880’s Victorian homes and the famous Sears bungalows and Arts & Craft houses that were built between the two world wars.

Numerous (famous) historic sites call Hyattsville their home. Among these are the Frederick Holden House, Hyattsville Armory, Hyattsville Post Office, Prince George’s Bank and the Benjamin Smith House. A section of Hyattsville (the Hyattsville Historic District) was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Few cities in America can equal this level of history and distinction in Maryland real estate communities.

Convenience

Transportation in and around Hyattsville is enhanced by the Metro subway’s Green line or the MARC commuter rail. Hyattsville enjoys its presence within the Capital Beltway, with easy access to Washington and Baltimore.

Education

Hyattsville is proud of its education as a member of Prince George’s County School District. Its public schools consist of a total of seven, accompanied by six private (parochial schools). With the addition of arts, children’, history and science museums within the Hyattsville area, this is surely a terrific place to raise children and expose them to the best and most treasured historic venues.

In addition to its proximity to the national recognized and treasured museums and landmarks of this area, Hyattsville has its own share of local attractions. Among these are Hitching Post Hill or Ash Hill, Adelphi Mill and Route One within the historic downtown Hyattsville area.
