Patuxent River Appreciation Days - Parade is Sunday, Octobr 11 at 2pm on Solomons Island!
Celebrated annually for more than 30 years, PRAD (Patuxent river Appreciation Days) is a two day celebration of the Patuxent River in Solomons, Maryland. Sponsored by the Calvert County Board of Commissioners, Calvert Marine Museum, Pa-Po-Peake Shrine Club and various other civic and fraternal organizations, this year's event is October 10 and 11, 2009.
Free Calvert Marine Museum admission, boat rides, toy boat building, arts and crafts, music, great food and games offer fun for everyone on both days.
Sunday's highlight is the annual mile-long parade at 2:00 p.m. organized by Pa-Po-Peake Shrine Club. Groups are encouraged to participate and build a float. Prizes will be awarded for creativity, beauty, and charm: first prize is $300, second prize is $200, and $100 for third prize. Pre-registration is required by September 11. This year's festival will take place on October 10th and 11th. The festival runs from 10am-5pm and includes the "Green Village" which features scores of groups that celebrate the river in a wide variety of ways, children's activities including pony rides (for a fee), an arts and crafts show and food court, musical performances, an open house at the Calvert Marine Museum, and a Parade at 2:00 on Sunday. Free harbor cruises will be offered on board 2 historic vessels: the 110 year old bugeye, Wm. B. Tennison, the sailing skipjack the Nathan of Dorchester.
New in 2009
Taste the Bounty of the Patuxent in the Corbin Pavilion with local wineries, local produce, and other goodies.
Admission to the event is free; financial support is given by Calvert County Government, and monies brought in by the food court and craft show booth fees. Excess funds are returned to the community in the form of grants.
This year the event will take place on the grounds of the Calvert Marine Museum. The Arts and Crafts show and Food Vendors will be located on the paved parking lot of the museum. All visitor parking will be in the field across the street with easy access to the event.
Parking is FREE as is the event itself.
Directions to Solomons Island
Solomons Island, Maryland is located on State Route 2 in Solomons, Calvert County, Southern Maryland, twenty miles south of Prince Frederick.
From Washington, D.C. - Take State Route 4 east from the Washington Beltway to State Route 2-4 to Solomons.
From Baltimore - Take Interstate 97 south from the Baltimore Beltway, to State Route 3 and U.S. Route 301 south to State Route 4. Continue south/east to State Route 2-4 to Solomons.
You can also take I-97 south to the Aris T. Allen Boulevard exit (Route 665), then follow signs for Solomons Island, Route 2 South. Go south on Route 2, following signs for Prince Frederick. Route 2 will join with Route 4 - make a left from Route 2 onto Route 2-4 south. Follow Route 2-4 south/east to Solomons.
From Richmond - Take U.S. route 301 north into Maryland, then State Route 234 east to State Route 5, south on State Route 5 passing Leonardtown, left on State Route 4 across the Thomas Johnson Bridge (lower Patuxent River Bridge) to State Route 2 at east end of the bridge.
