START A SPRING GARDEN IN SOUTHERN MARYLAND
THINK SPRING!! Get past all the snow and THINK SPRING!!
It doesn't seem possible with so much snow around, but when it is gone it will be time to plant.
Start your garden inside in your home and get a head start.
If you plant tomato seeds in pots indoors mid-month, the seedlings will be ready to transplant into the garden after the last spring frost, typically the first or second week of April in Southern Maryland.
When the snow is gone prepare for your Sping Vegetable Garden. Be sure it's not too wet. Dig in some compost or well rotted manure and begin planting. Collards, peas, radishes, spinach and turnips can go in any time this month. Wait until the last week of February to put in potatoes.
Information originally shared in The Washington Post Southern Maryland.

February 12-15 is the time for the great Backyard bird count. For those of you who are new to this it's fun and easy. This takes place annually and it's a four day event that anyone who loves birds and nature can participate in. It takes as little as 15 minutes a day or you can count for as long as you like each day of the event. You tally the highest number of birds of each species seen together at one time, then you report the count, and fill out the online check list at The Great Backyard Bird count website.
Cardinal
Pair of eagles on Patuxent River

Cooper Hawk
Downy Woodpecker
As the days go on anyone with Internet access can see whats being reported from their own town or anywhere in the United States. You can see how the numbers differ from year to year and you can also send in your photographs. The ones above are right in my back yard in California Md. You may ask why do this? other then it's fun scientists use this information to give them an immense picture of our birds, such as birds undergoing declines that point to the need for conservation attention, How will the snow and cold temperatures influence the bird populations one year and not the next? You might also wonder why do this in February? this is done before the great migrations begin in March, Of course, you can get hooked on bird watching and before you know it you will have put in your yard several different feeding stations. For help identifying the birds you see, there re many different guides, I use Peterson Field Guides (Eastern Birds) The Audubon Society Field Guides are also wonderful. You can go to www.allaboutbirds.org for more information.
