Offshore powerboat racing may come to Tawas Bay next year

An effort is underway to bring offshore powerboat racing to Tawas Bay next summer.

east tawas powerboatsA local businessman told the East Tawas City Council at its meeting Monday he and 3 other persons are working with a offshore powerboat racing association which holds 2 other events in Michigan.

"They're looking for a 3rd event for the Great Lakes to hold a triple crown challenge."

He said the group has been holding offshore powerboat racing the past 17 years in the St. Clair Shores area and last year held it for the 1st time along Port Huron. The event has been popular and successful in both communities.

Tawas City MI, seeks grant for covered bridge.

A new covered bridge may find its way over the Tawas River if the city is awarded a grant. The new bridge would replace the current wooden bridge tawas city mi, covered bridgeover Mathews St, and be funded through a state grant.

The grant, from the Michigan Strategic Fund in the form of a Community Development Block Grant and Downtown Infrastructure Grant would pay for the estimated $350,000 replacement cost for the bridge.

The city would provide matching funds for the grant at 15% or $45,000 - depending on how much the bridge would cost.

Michigan Walleye Tour will return to Tawas this weekend

The Michigan Walleye Tour will hold a 2 day fishing tournament in Tawas Bay this Saturday and Sunday, according to organizers.

boatThe tour travels to walleye locations in Michigan for events that culminate with a state championship. The Tawas Bay event is the last qualifying fishing tournament before the finale, to be held on Lake Leelanau in September.

A busy weekend at Tawas Point State Park with the Tawas Point Celebration Days festival taking place on its grounds last weekend.

The annual event, put on by the Friends of Tawas Point Lighthouse & State Park and the lighthouseMichigan Department of Natural resources, stems from the early 1980s, originally as a bluegrass festival, and provides family fun and educational opportunities for all ages.

According to organizers, the idea behind the event was to provide family entertainment without a beer tent. As long as there is an educational opportunity, any vendor or exhibitor is invited.

Over the weekend, the celebration gave visitors a chance to participate in arts and crafts projects from more than 100 years ago.
