What a great run! Saturday, November 8, 2008, our company held its first timed 5k (and fun run for those who were just out for the day)! We had over 70 people come out on a beautiful sunny day in 60 degree weather to run and raise money for East Iredell Elementary School's Child Nutrition Department. Queen City Timing were there to set up for the timing and chips. WSIC was there to play music and Butts A'runnin Enterprises were there for the announcements and awards ceremony.

The Realtors at Tarheel Realty II decided last year that we wanted to support a local group that doesn't get national recognition. We decided that the needy children in the school systems could benefit from our help. So we contacted Susie Wiberg of Iredell Statesville Schools and she helped us to partner with East Elementary. Each year there are children's whose parents don't sign them up for the free and reduced lunch program even though applications are always sent home with each child. Many children fall thru the cracks. The Child Nutrition Department recognizes the need for every child to be fed and sees that lunches are always provided for these children. But every year there is a deficit, so we decided to help meet that need and all our proceeds will be given to the Child Nutrition Department.

We had lots of sponsors help support our event. A big thank you to each and every sponsor who were there for us. Thanks to the volunteers we had that day we were able to man the water stations, set-up the drinks and food, and the stations that are so important for a race. Everyone seemed to have a great time and plan on coming back next year.

GPS Treasure Hunt at The 35th Annual Carolina BalloonFest

This year is sure to be an incredible event for all of the family at the Carolina BalloonFest--with a twist! If you like mysteries then you’ll be intrigued by what is hidden under all sorts of things--twigs, straw and leaves--at this year’s Carolina BalloonFest. In order to participate in discovering the treasures and get the most enjoyment out of the event, you’ll need to bring your handheld GPS device.


The year's event will be held Friday, October 24 – Sunday, October 26 at the Statesville Regional Airport, which is only 45 minutes northeast of Charlotte, North Carolina. Admission is $8 per person and is free for children under 5 years of age. The Carolina BalloonFest is the most popular and the largest hot air balloon rally held in North Carolina and is celebrating 35 years of bright color, excitement and all-round family fun. The Carolina BalloonFest is the second-oldest rally in the nation.

Even if you're not into ballooning, there are many other events to participate in including North Carolina wine tastings, children’s activities, musical entertainment, and the intrigue of watching the breathtaking, colorful balloons inflate and ascend into the Carolina sky.

As for the treasures: Global Positioning Systems (GPS) are a key component not only in our day-to-day lives but, also in the newest form of outdoor fun – geocaching. Armed with longitude and latitude data, your GPS and a thirst for adventure, you can locate all kinds of goodies tucked away in the most unusual places--sort of like hide and seek for children of ALL ages! With this game of hide and seek, once you've found a treasure, you take it and replace it with something else. Some of the items that are found in a geocache box include pencils, notebooks, money, dice, magnets, bookmarks and small toys.

Geocache sites can be located in parks, parking lots, residential neighborhoods, along country roads or even in towns. This year, one of the geocache sites will be the Carolina BalloonFest! For a more comprehensive list of geocache sites, visit www.geocaching.com.

“We’re very excited about this new component,” says Libba Barrineau, executive director of the Statesville Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We already have four treasures set up around town and see couples, families, singles of all ages come to play. So we know people will be anxious to see what we have in store for them at the balloon rally.”

Balloon rally gates will be open for treasure seekers on Friday 3-9 p.m., Saturday 7 a.m.-9 p.m. and Sunday 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Weather permitting, balloon ascensions will begin at 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The hot air balloon glow will be held on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

The Statesville Regional Airport is located off I-40 exits 146 and 148. Follow the signs. The GPS address is longitude 80.9552W and latitude 35.754N.
