George and Lito's * Charming Neighborhood Bistro * Halifax Nova Scotia

Deborah Pearce: Home Stager in Kelowna, BC

Sitting pretty on the corner of Windsor Avenue and Duncan Street, which just happened to be my neighborhood for the summer of /08, is 'George and Lito's'.

Recently opened as I arrived in Halifax July 1/08, I watched Stamos (the owner) evolve his unique corner of the neighborhood into an increasingly popular spot.

From the tiled floor, the black, white and red decor of 'George and Litto's flows pleasantly, hinting at 1950's diner style with upscale post modern and deco elements. The street corner came absolutely alive with the patio addition over the summer /08, raising the ambient score a few notches over its already charming ambience.

This versatile little cafe with a significant seating capacity, inside and out, runs from breakfast through to dinner.

Believe it! For about $5 you can have a great traditional breakfast, but prepared and presented in exquisite style, making it taste even better!! Since I was staying just a half block away, it was just TOO convenient to mosy over for breakfast - several times!

The vegan breakfastis a Greek plate of houmous and pita, dolmades and tabbouli. Irresistable and DELICIOUS, this dish is a great lunch, or any-time appie plate, also!!

Now honestly, I never had dinner here. That time of day often found me in other parts. I did stop in late one evening needing my veggie fix. I was served a marvelously fresh small salad in a bowl that had a deceptively huge capacity, with salad that just kept coming out of it - again for under $5 !

Sorry I never got a photo of George and Litto's. Perhaps I will call Stamos and ask if he can email some. In any case check it out yourself - you'll be glad you did!

Oh did I say you can get breakfast until 4pm?

Why of course you can!

The relaxed casual chic essence in all aspects of this cafe, made it a favorite for lounging over breakfast with a newspaper while on vacation.

...another reason to just LOVE Halifax!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thinking of buying in Halifax - What are you waiting for ?

Paul Viau , Guaranty GMAC ,Halifax, N.S.: Real Estate Agent in Halifax, NS

A recent slowdown in Halifax home sales has me thinking. What are the people thinking?

Just this week positive notes in the US market! It seems that people are on the move again ! New home sales jumped in August 7.4% from july data ! Maybe it's just a blip on the radar screen

Halifax has no industry to slow down. We have hospitals , 4 universities , and a abundance of IT jobs .

People are going to always get sick! And the enrollment in our universities is fine. We still have record amounts of people retiring here from Calgary ,Toronto etc.

Sure! theres the odd number of buyers that will take advantage of the situation and low-ball some property , but there's only so much available. The inventory hasn't sky-rocketed like in Calgary where the prices have gone up at a feverish rate for over 5 years. They were due for a correction there.

I read an interesting article in the Nova Scotia Business Journal. Where an analyst shared my view. - Prices shall not drop here. They may not rise as fast next year but they will rise.

If you are a buyer sitting on the fence - Why not give me a call and we can discuss the situation over a coffee?

I can be reached at 902-499-2950.

The Halifax Real Estate market has had a very steady rise in price since the turn of the century. The number of sales has remained relatively the same over that period. This year we are on pace to be slightly behind last year's numbers which were a record. I do see this trend slowing a little in the future due to the financial turmoil in the world markets, however I think Halifax will still remain as one of the healthiest Real Estate Markets in Canada. Some of the factors that I feel gives the Halifax Real Estate Market such promise are;

1) Gateway port

2) Military/Navy

3) University city

4) Hub for Atlantic Canada

5) IT sector

When I say that the market is going to slow I am referencing the number of sales. I do not see prices going down in the foreseeable future. Now is not the time to wait for that to happen in Halifax. The prices here are far below other cities in Canada and have a lot of room to grow.

If you are in the market to buy or sell Halifax Real Estate do not hesitate to contact me.

Goverment announces money for Green Projects

Andrew Perkins: Real Estate Agent in Halifax, NS

$2.6M on the table for green projects

HALIFAX - Residential windmills and carbon-capturing concrete are two of 21 environmental projects to win government grant money.
Mark Parent, provincial environment minister, made the announcement at the Power of Green conference in Halifax yesterday. "In terms of greenhouse gases, (these projects are) equivalent to taking over 10,000 cars off the road permanently, forever," Parent explained to reporters after his speech at the Cunard Centre.
These were the winners picked by EcoNova Scotia for clean air and climate change. Applications were placed under two grant-giving programs for environmental technologies and municipal projects.
This group of winners -the third announcement so far for EcoNova Scotia - cost $2.6 million. Parent said that money will leverage into over $8 million with what the projects will bring in. He said he has especially high hopes for the Carbon Sense Solutions project, which captures carbon emissions in concrete. "I dream of the day - because we make concrete in Nova Scotia - instead of importing asphalt from elsewhere, we can build our own concrete roads and we capture carbon at the same time."
But for some companies, investing in green solutions might take a backseat because of the grim global economic outlook. Some people will be cautious, Parent said, but there are ‘real opportunities' in the green economy. "We've seen a freeze in capital and lending so these programs (like EcoNova Scotia) will be more important for businesses to find the necessary capital to do innovative projects," he said.
Shawna Eason, energy officer with Cumberland County, got $10,000 from EcoNova Scotia to conduct an energy audit of county properties. "It's looking at where they're losing money, but also emissions because anywhere electricity is being used where we can reduce it is going to save them money and is going to save the emissions," she said.

Taken From The Chronicle Herald

It is great to see initiative being taken in a Green Economy. Over the years I am sure we will see more projects coming on board. If you are in the market for a new house, as a member of Clean Nova Scotia I offer my clients a free energy audit which could save you thousands of dollars for both renovation costs and energy savings.
