While vacationing in Cape Breton Island Canada, I came across a Friday night music fest in a nearby barn. The "ceilidh" (Gaelic) pronounced "KAY LEE" is a Cape Breton tradition. Fiddlers, guitar players, piano players gather for hours and hours of great song and danc
Most of Cape Breton was settled by Scotts and this folk tradition is alive and well. I think every man woman and child in Cape Breton must play some sort of instrument, including the spoons!
The first fiddler to perform was just 17 years old and the second girl was just fifteen. She has been playing since she was 7!
One of the guitarists Scott Mc Millan , composes for the Nova Scotia symphony and has had a long career in jazz, rock and traditional Cape Breton music. Friday night's ceilidh was over four and a half hours long. People just keep playing and then the step dancing starts and it is just the best family, fun on the planet! You can't stop tapping your feet. Don't miss it is you love fiddlin!
