HISTORIC TOM QUICK INN TO RE-OPEN!

MILFORD, Pa. — Reza Ghassemi was standing at the bar in the ballroom of the Tom Quick Inn on Tuesday morning. The bar was covered with a thin layer of dust and about a half-dozen contractors were working on the building.

A few weeks ago, the building looked abandoned. Ghassemi, a hotel consultant out of Baltimore, is set to close on the building in May, but renovations have begun at a breakneck pace to meet a June 15 deadline for reopening the Milford landmark.

The historic inn, built in 1882, has 16 rooms. It was condemned in 2007 because it wasn't up to fire code. That has been remedied, but the inn is still awaiting its certificate of appropriateness, Ghassemi said.

Ghassemi is the managing partner in this venture with Bill Chiles and Joe Broesler of Hickory Travel, a consortium with 1,400 offices nationwide.

The economic downturn might be making Milford a more attractive destination to value-conscious travelers, Ghassemi said. "People are taking shorter trips in cars for vacations rather than flying somewhere," he said. New York magazine named Milford a good value getaway. Travel+Leisure magazine did a large feature on Milford in March.

THE ZOO NEEDS YOU! HAVE YOU BEEN TO THIS LANDMARK?

Debra Walsh Orange Cty NY Real Estate 845.355.8439: Real Estate Agent in Middletown, NY

The recession is causing the moving of hundreds of animals from the Bronx Zoo. Other zoos around the country will be accepting bats, deer, foxes, antelopes and other animals that can no longer be housed at the Bronx Zoo. They will be closing 4 exhibits including the World of Darkness due to a $15 million budget deficit.

The Bronx Zoo is 114 years old and is the largest metropolitan zoo in the United States. More than 2 million people visit each year. It is made up of 265 acres of park lands and habitats through which the Bronx River flows. The Bronx Zoo itself is located within the Bronx Park in New York City and is south of the New York Botanical Garden. When the zoo opened its doors in November 1899, there were 843 animals in 22 exhibits. In 2006 the Bronx Zoo housed over 4000 animals many of which are a threatened species. The Bronx Zoo has been designated as a New York City Landmark. Your donations are needed to help keep this landmark thriving!
