The First Ithaca Artist's Market was a grand success, based on my own observation and walk-about of the market last Saturday. It was packed to the gills with all sorts of visitors looking for a unique holiday gift, or something for their own enjoyment. There was a lot to choose from, and I had to force myself to be disciplined. But I did walk away with some nice finds, and some contacts for later follow-up, as most of the vendors sell directly to the public from home studios or via web or phone sales.
The first booth that caught my eye was that of Torie Tiffany, whose work is unique and fresh. She produces two collections: "Fleurotica", which is a blend of bodies and blossoms, and "Faunagraphs", a critter collection. You can see a hint of her work in the photo at left here, featuring mostly the florals, which have strategically intwined erotic or anatomical embellishments. Some are quite subtle, and I had to work at picking the images out, which makes them fun pieces, sort of a mystery game!
Nerys Gregory had florals at her booth also, but of a more traditional sort - Nerys is a watercolor artist who creates lovely floral images in all sizes, including large serial pieces, small greeting cards, and a newer long-on-the-vertical rectangular shaped work. I've admired her work for a while now and will be looking for her greeting cards again in the future, as they make lovely gifts that reflect the local environment. She is a member of the Art Trail, with a lovely stop at her home studio in Ellis Hollow.
One booth stood out because it was the ONLY food booth at the event - I was delighted to see that I KNEW this person, Anastasia, from my yoga class at Wells College in Aurora. What I didn't know was that together with her mom Annie, they run a very cool little business called "Man In The Moon Classic Cheesecake & Deserts, which supports local farmers and producers, and provides scrumptious cheesecake and cookies for all of Central New York!

The First Ithaca Artists Market was well received, and was planned to coincide with a number of other fabulous holiday events, including another first, the First Ithaca Chowder Cook-Off, and the well-loved Ithaca Ice Wars, a very popular ice-carving competition where nothing is spared! The Ithaca Ballet's presentation of "The Nutcracker" was the performing arts draw, and a number of art boutiques were offering special hours or tours, or special pricing just for the holidays. Something for everyone, and I hope you were able to take advantage of it - if not, we'll hope to see you DOWNTOWN, NEXT YEAR!!

Second, YOU may have moved! If so, please drop me a line and let me know the best way to keep in touch – by email, phone, drop-in, etc. I am a social person, I enjoy the drop-in myself but I hate to do that to busy people.
Third, there is a TON of fun to be had in town this weekend, and I wanted to mention a few highlights in case you’ve been too busy to read the paper or listen to the radio – here are my TOP PICKS for holiday fun in Ithaca this weekend!
Downtown Ithaca’s Winter Festival – This is an all encompassing event that is sure to have something to please everyone – from the GALA opening of the new Fingerlakes Wine Center on Friday night, to the Chowder Cook-off and Ice Sculpture Competition on Saturday, you won’t be disappointed with a visit to the downtown scene this weekend. I sure hope you’ll make the trip, and maybe I’ll see you there!
Serviente’s Glass Studio – The fine folks at Serviente’s will be having their ONLY sale of the year on Saturday, from 11 am – 5pm. Get there early for the best selection of one of a kind glass gifts.
Christmas Trees – This week only, on Saturday, you may find a very beautiful natural Christmas Tree, available for a donation to Greensprings Natural Cemetery, in Newfield, NY. That’s right, you read it right! Check out the website for details – they are a natural burial ground with a healthy invasion of Norway Spruce occurring on their land – you will be aiding them if you stop over and help with a donation for a freshly cut tree – BONUS: the trees may be hauled out by draft horse hitch! Hot chocolate, tea and cookies to boot!
FREE YOGA! – Last but not least, I am out of space, but for the rest of this week only, check out the FREE yoga on Triphammer, right near the mall! Free Stuff!!

Christmas Trees for (Almost) Free in Ithaca, NY - at Greensprings Natural Cemetery
Please don't get the wrong idea here folks, cemeterys are not the usual real estate blog post topic; or when they are, they are the butt of bad jokes.
But this is for real, you can find and cut for yourself, a lovely Norway Spruce tree, and have it loaded on a horse drawn cart to be taken to your car in the parking lot, this Saturday from 11 am - 2pm at Greensprings Natural Cemetery. Their website "naturalburial.org" can give you a bit more background on them and what they are about. To be honest, I had never heard of them before seeing the small blurb in the Ithaca Jornal about their tree cutting day, but of course, it makes sense - they promote the use of natural decomposing materials, when making burial arrangements for a loved one. Seems like a great idea to me, I was figuring on cremation myself, but if I were going into the ground, I'd want to be just as useful as I try to be in life! Help a new tree grow by adding your cells to the mix ;-)
Okay, on to the details: call 564-7577 for questions and more information, or drive over to 293 Irish Hill Rd. on Saturday between 11-2pm, pick your tree and go! Donations are welcome, but not required. You will be helping them control what has now turned into an mini-invasion of this species of tree on the burial grounds, so it's a definite win-win! Plus, hot cocoa, tea and cookies? I'm sold!
Reporting from Ithaca, NY on a bright but cold winter day!

WELCOME PIGGERY!!
Surreality in Ithaca, NY!
Drive-Through Deli Serves Coffee with an Oink in Ithaca, NY!!
The newest small business to hit our local scene is creating a "buzz", literally and figuratively, with their new concept for an old drive-through coffee shop. Situated in the location formerly known as "BUZZ" drive-through coffee shop, THE PIGGERY, a local farm CSA with outlets in the Ithaca Farmers Market, and in Manhattan at the Union Square Farmer's Market, has re-christened the location as "The Piggery" drive-through coffee and delicatessen as of last week! Now you can pick up a pound of bacon or sausage when you order you coffee at the drive-through window. Be aware though, that the deli service hours aren't set to start until noon on most days. You can find these fine folks on Facebook and at their sweet new shop location at 423 Franklin St., in Ithaca, as well as at the locations mentioned earlier. Here are some photos from their grand opening days!

TRUMANSBURG FAIR KEEPS TRADITIONS ALIVE IN TRUMANSBURG, NY
I took my first trip to the Trumansburg Fair this year - specifically to watch the Demolition Derby with my boyfriend Rob, who is a motorsports guy. The fair is really reminiscent of my childhood in Guam, where we had our community fair in July every year, on the 21st, to coincide with Guam's Liberation Day.
The sounds, sights, and aromas of a Fairgrounds are quite distinct - and a bit overstimulating, to be sure. I got snap-happy (with the camera) within a few minutes of getting onto the grounds, and enjoyed taking it all in before the crowd filled the grandstand for the derby.
Being that it was my first demolition derby, I was quite excited to see and feel the energy of cars crashing! I think sometimes, "I could do something like that", but then the self-preservation thoughts kick in "I would like to protect my neck"! So for now, I'll stay safely in the grandstand and observe the action.
According to Rob, it was a very light year for the derby this year - only 3 heats, with just 8 cars each in the first two, and 12 cars in the last. Usually he said there are at least as many heats or more, and more like 16 cars in each heat, PLUS a powder puff division. This year it seemed that there was only 1 entry in that division, so we didn't even stick around for that.
It's a sign of the times I guess, that some of the things we do just for fun and amusement are harder to afford this year than in years past. But as all things are cyclical, I hope for an eventual return to a more robust economy and job market here in Trumansburg in the not too distant future.
DERBY HOPEFULS LINE UP FOR THEIR HEATS!
