Straddling The Oak Ridge Moraine - Uxbridge - The Trail Capital Of Canada

Kathy Clulow ASP® SRES®: Real Estate Agent in Uxbridge, ON

Uxbridge Straddles the Oak ridges Moraine and has distinction of holding the official designation as the Trail Capital of Canada

Town Trails

The Uxbridge trail system includes a network of urban trails that connect to the Oak Ridges Trail and the Trans Canada Trail. The town trails are designed to help residents appreciate the beauty and history of their town by linking various sections of the town together for both walkers and bikers. The Town Trails include the Ewen Trail, the Historic Trail, the Maple Bridge Trail, the Quaker trail, the Wooden Sticks Trail, and Country Side Preserve.

The Countryside Preserve

With 6 kms of marked trails this 140 acre preserve of rolling meadowlands, woodlands, wetlands and ponds is the jewel in the crown for the Trail Capital of Canada. Located adjacent to the urban area it is located on the southern boundaries of the Uxbridge and on the Oak Ridges Moraine.

The Oak Ridges Moraine

Uxbridge straddles the heights of Oak Ridges Moraine, a ridge of land that runs parallel to Lake Ontario, approximately 60 km north of the lake and extending from the Niagara escarpment in the west to the Trent River in the east. The rolling hills and river valley that make up the Moraine are the result of the advancing and retreating glaciers some 12,000 years ago. Forty five percent of The Township of Uxbridge is located with in the protected area of the Oak Ridges Moraine. This includes extensive rural and natural areas, as well as some hamlets and even a portion of the urban area of the "Town".

The Oak Ridges Moraine = from Wikipedia

Map of The Moraine from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Oak Ridges Moraine is a Provincially protected, environmentally sensitive, area that covers 190,000 hectares. It is important to note that the large deposits of sand and gravel left by the Ice Ages also play a significant part in providing drinking water to a large portion of Ontario's population. The sand and gravel (aquifers) filter rain and melting snow, this filtered water is then released through the rivers and streams flowing south into lake Ontario and North into Lake Simcoe, Lake Scugog, and Rice lake.

Wetlands and Streams

With the wide diversity of, kettle lakes, bogs, wetlands, woodlands and streams, it is no surprise that 65 river systems are found within its boundaries. Roughly 30% of the Moraine is still forested making it is one of the last remaining green belts in southern Ontario.

Meet others who have turned their property into a retreat or a backyard into an urban oasis. Tickets $20.00, includes box lunch, available at Blue Heron Books,  RBC Royal Bank, and Garden Artifacts. 1.      Garden Hosts: Brian & Dianne

With a casual gardening philosophy, using traditional favourites, Dianne and Brian have devoted 20 years to building a spectacular flower garden oasis surrounding their century home and barn. Flowers are everywhere, particularly Asiatic and day lily beds, with a large pond surrounded by flower beds. As you pass thru the front garden, the raised vegetable garden is of particular interest, as well note the interesting places to sit. The foundation from the original barn provides a unique backdrop to a garden graced by iron gates and wrought iron window boxes.

2.      Garden Hosts: Jody & Wayne

Begin your tour at the front with a walk thru the woodland shade garden. Enter the back garden thru the pergola passing along side the vegetable garden, where the walkway takes you to a formal dining area. From there you can wander to any part of this large property. Arbors lead you from one area to another. Wayne's folly adds a decorative element to the garden. Jody divides her spare time between gardening and being an active volunteer for Durham Hospice. She hopes you'll share her passion and visit www.durhamhospice.com to find out more about how you can help.

3.      Garden Hosts: Dave & Karen

Through continuous learning and experimentation this property is a series of informal gardens with a variety of themes that are both kid and dog friendly. The casual country garden is filled with strolling paths and it is an attractive habitat for birds, butterflies and dragonflies. Backing onto a forest can present challenges, such as wildlife nibbling at the plants but it does provide a natural backdrop for wild flowers and perennials to blend; an ornamental fish pond with a rock garden add to the peaceful feeling of the landscape.

4.      Garden Hosts: Lisa & Kerry

"Everything Goes" is Lisa's motto when it comes to her compact garden and pool which features many colorful perennials and a rock garden that features a water fountain for the birds to enjoy. The front yard will catch your attention as you drive up, but the backyard is what is most enchanting with a unique fence that allows both privacy and openness. Feel free to take a peak at the neighbouring gardens; they add even more enjoyable space.

5.      Garden Hosts: Margaret & Gary

As the saying goes "Good things come in small packages".  The yard may be small - but it is abundant in Bee Balm, Hydrangeas, lilies and many perennials along with annual splashes of color.  The "Little Garden that Grew" has been an ever changing palate as each year goes by with the sun, sun/shade and shady spots being always challenging for Margaret to work with.  The garden is accented with a Buddha and a Shady Lady and Gary's "walk through" garden shed allows for easy access from both the front and back yards.  Towering cedars trees and the sounds of rushing water make the back yard a quiet oasis from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

6.      Garden Host: Lorraine

Being a creative and daring gardener, Lorraine finds gardening therapeutic and peaceful. Her use of perennials, grasses and  herbs are divided into three main sections; sunny, part sun/shade and shade. The water features of her garden, such as the pondless waterfall and pool add a unique dimension to this garden. A relaxation/dining area offers a space for entertaining and outdoor living.

7.      Garden Hosts: Peter & Donna

This garden is a hole-in-one and sure to please both garden and golf enthusiasts. Together, Donna and Peter have created a backyard in which to relax and enjoy the birds, once all the work is done. The pool/garden area offers many special features such as a Victorian garden shed, pond and outdoor fireplace. Hanging baskets give full colour throughout the season. So pull up a Muskoka chair and relax!

8.      Garden Hosts: Wolfgang & Judy

A special passion for roses, as well as hostas and hydrangeas, typifies this garden that has lots to offer in a very small space. Walk around the property on the stone walkway and notice the use of natural stone for garden definition. Special accents include a stone bench on the front yard and a small pond in the backyard.
