About York County, ON

Taking a master bedroom from safari to inviting retreat in one day.

Michelle Finnamore: Home Stager in Barrie, ON

Travelling is a wonderful thing. It allows you see other ways of living and inspires you to want to bring home some memories. It can have such an impact on you that you just have to bring back some of that happy feeling by decorating your home with items that make that happen for you. Only thing is, buyers don't have those fond memories of the place you travelled to.

When you list your house for sale, it is now a product for sale. That means all the personal themed items are stored away and the house is marketed for sale to appeal to the widest range of buyers.

65% of people will pay more for a house that looks "move in ready". And that means neutral decor and colours that allow them to see their belongings in your home. So long safari and hello beautiful bedroom retreat.

This home staging at Norstar Harmony Village in North York now has buyers saying "absolutely beautiful, I want to move right in".

Stager's help: Wooden Furniture

Canadian Real Estate Insights: Real Estate Media in Toronto, ON

Wooden furniture is an artistic showpiece with its natural patterns and colors. Moreover, if you look after of your wooden furniture then it can last you for many generations. The cost for this type of quality is the need for regular maintenance. Experts from Toronto home staging company Last Detail have years of experience with all kinds of furniture. They shared some basic maintenance tips with us.

General attention

There are few rules, which can be applied to all kinds of wooden furniture. Humidity is a woods nastiest foe, so this is the first thing you need to be taught. Consequently, don’t use wet cloths for cleaning, alternatively use a soft cloth or vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment. Keep the wooden furniture dry at all times by removing any moisture or spills. Put furniture in a room with a non fluctuating temperature, thus staying away from temperature and humidity extremes. Refrain from putting your wooden furniture next to any heating source.

After humidity, the sun is another big foe of wood. The sun fades wood and can be the cause of color fading. This development is slow, but virtually permanent. In addition, very hot things, like hot cups, lights or candles can cause instantaneous damage. Wood care in the form of cork mats is something that your need to acquire - avoid mats made of plastic and rubber substances as these can ruin the surface. With these mats you can shield the surface of the wood when placing items on it such as hot cups and sharp objects.

Variations of veneers

More detailed care has to be based on the type of veneer is used on your furniture, since every kind reacts in a different way. As a normal rule there are three different sorts of wood coatings you need to be aware of, these are soft (oiled), painted and hard (lacquer, varnish, polyurethane and shellac). Although painted finishing can be easily identified, the others are not so easy.

To find out what covering the wood has then in a discreet spot softly rub a small amount of linseed into it. Linseed will be soaked up if the surface is oiled. If the wood doesnt absorb the linseed then try a small drop of acetone. While polyurethane discards acetone like water, lacquer disintegrates in seconds. If the veneer turns tacky then you can determine it is a varnish or shellac. If you want to differentiate between these two finishes, use a couple of drops of alcohol – shellac reacts much quicker.

Look out for the later chapter in wood furniture maintenance where we will investigate these different types of finishes.
