About Wasco County, OR

It's that time of year again. The summer heat has put the finishing touches on the wheatfields and wheat harvest has been underway in Wasco and neighboring counties for the last several weeks. Things got started a little later than usual this year due to the cold rainy spring, however the extra rain has produced an above-average crop.

With drought and wildfires in Russia causing them to ban exports for the rest of year and bad weather in Canada, there is a greater demand for U.S. wheat so prices are also above average. That is welcome news for local farmers and ranchers who have had a lot of ups and downs over the past several years. Wheat prices shot up in July as Russia, the world's #3 wheat exporter, saw one-fifth of their wheat crop destroyed by severe drought and raging wildfires. Canada, another major exporter of wheat, is also expecting low yields because of crops that were destroyed by heavy rains. Large portions of Oregon and Washington wheat are exported, most of it through Columbia River ports.

These photos are from the beautiful Dufur Valley where wheatfields abound. The town of Dufur was founded by Andrew J. Dufur, Jr., a successful "raiser of stock". The area was a stopping point on the Oregon Trail for those travelling over the Barlow Trail instead of down the Columbia River. The town received its post office in 1878 but the earliest records show church meetings in 1862.

We are getting new pavement on west 6th in the dalles oregon but watch out for the detour!

THIS JUST IN (4pm 8/24/10)The City Public Works Department will keep West 6^th Street closed overnight on Tuesday night from west of Exit83 to Snipes Street. Due to the hot weather, the new pavement needs to be protected from traffic so that it can cool and harden with a smooth finish.

Last weekend marked the 40th anniversary of the Dufur Threshing Bee in Dufur, Oregon, one of the few events of its kind in the country. At the "Bee" visitors can watch horse-drawn antique harvesting equipment being used in the fields. This is the only threshing event that uses horse-drawn machinery and demonstrates each step of the process from cutting standing wheat to sewing up bags for shipping. The event was founded 40 years ago by Everett Metzentine and Bob DePriest. To mark this years anniversary the families of both men were honored as Grand Marshalls at the Saturday morning parade.

In the late 1800s, harvesting a wheat crop was a difficult process. It often took teams of 32 horses to move the harvesting equipment. Farmers hired harvest crews and worked long hours. Their wives fed the crews, usually spending their days in portable cook shacks preparing meals for as many as 30 men.

The Threshing Bee is held the second weekend in August and in addition to the horse-powered and other farming equipment, offers demonstrations in blacksmithing, wheelrighting, a schoolhouse other examples of early settlers way of life. There is also a tractor pull, a steak feed in the park and a breakfast at the Ramsey Grange Hall. Sunday features a classic car show in the Dufur Park.

The weather was perfect Thursday evening, warm with just enough breeze. Curtis Salgado was singing the blues for this months Music In The Park concert at The Dalles City Park. He is without a doubt one of the finest blues harmonica players in the country. He was dressed warmly all in black but stressed it was more important to look cool than be comfortable!

Curtis Salgado was born in Everett, Washington and grew up in Eugene, Oregon listening to jazz. He became a part of the Northwest blues scene when it was developing in 1972, playing with many musicians over the years including Robert Cray, Muddy Waters, Steve Miller and The Doobie Brothers. In 1979, when John Belushi was in Eugene filming Animal House, Curtis met Belushi who became a great blues fan. That led Belushi and Dan Akroyd to base the now famous Blues Brothers act on Curtis and his music. In fact, the first Blues Brothers album was dedicated to Curtis.

It was a great evening of music and fun. The Music in the Park concerts are featured monthly during the summer. They are free however donations are accepted for the local food banks. The next concert is September 1st when the Stolen Sweets will perform.
