After leaving New York - Our next stop was Newport, Rhode Island. By the turn of the 20th century, many of the nation's wealthiest families were summering in Newport, in their gorgeous "cottages", such asThe Breakers, Belcourt Castle, The Elms, Marble House and Rosecliff. The Astors and the Vanderbilts came for a brief social season and to escapte they heat, and entertained in these grand, gilded mansions with elaborate receiving, dining, music and ballrooms, but strangely enough with few bedrooms, since the guests were expected to have cottages of their own! :-)
The social scene at Newport is described in one of my favorite books, Edith Wharton's the Age of Innocence.
With an amazing coastline Newport harbor is filled with all sorts of boats and is known s the sailing capital of the U.S. Probably most famous for holding and defending the America's Cup (which unfortunately is not in America anymore :-(
We had the best ever crabcakes for lunch at the White Horse Tavern, which was built in 1673 (and considered to be the oldest surviving tavern in the U.S.) - gave me goosebumps!
]Newport is also home to ,Hammersmith Farm (which is where Jackie Kennedy was married from) Prescott Farm and The Touro Synagogue, the oldest Jewish house of worship in the Western hemisphere. Apparently, George Washington gave a speech at the Touro Synagogue extolling the virtues of freedom of worship and the right for the Jewish people to live and worship freely in the United States.
Newport was also a major center of pirate activity during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. In the 1720s, colonial leaders, acting under pressure from the English government, arrested many pirates. Many were hanged in Newport and were buried on Goat Island.
And then there is Fort Adams the largest coastal fortification in the United States. It really is an engineering and architectural masterpiece and the setting for the Newport Jazz Festival - which we unfortunatelymissed by just one day!
Is it feet? Is it a wave? Remarkably, there is a sidewalk statue, a permanent wave on Thames St and Memorial with feet sticking out. But really, whose feet are they really? A lot of rumors about it; some say Greta Garbo, Merle Haggard, Dorothy Lamore, Billy Carter... It's a mystery!
All in all very cool, with the gorgeous historic mansions, the beautiful ocean drive, amazing harbor, and my favorite, the back in time Colonial Feel!

Newport Beach, RHODE ISLAND was recognized on a national level and made the top list for Travel and Leisure magazine for August 2010 as one of "America's Most Beautiful Coastal Views"
Rhode Island is called the Ocean State, and for a very good reason.
Rhode Island, called the Ocean State, ranks our 50th state, and comprises 1,545 square miles. However, if you exclude the area of Narragansett Bay, the land mass (LAND AREA) of Rhode Island is 1,045 square miles.
Land Area: 1,045 square miles
Length of coastline: 40 miles
Shoreline: 384 miles
It distance North to South is 48miles and East to West 37 miles.
As a native Rhode Islander, I am surrounded by the waterfront beauty that surrounds our littlest state of the union, its beaches, its cliffs, and remarkable gorgeous sunsets.
Things to do:
Do the Cliff Walk along the eastern shore of Aquidneck Island. It is FREE and open dawn to dusk and allows you to explore the scenic 3.5 mile stretch at your leisure.
The ocean shorelines are so spectacular and touch everyone of our senses. Breathe the fresh sea breeze, view and be awed by the breath-taking sparkling sunsets, feel the ocean winds, listen to the white noise of crashing waves and walk along the sand making footprints.
Allow the ocean and expanse of the water panaramic view to mesmerize and hypnotize you to a world that puts all your life's worries aside and into proper perspective.

Wine tastings abound around the country but we have the first Wine Tasting experience at the Newport RI Winefest at the Newport Yachting Center August 20-22nd 2010. This is purported to be the largest ever outdoor wine festival in New England. All the fruitful labors of the past season have been bottled up and are ready to be shared at this Newport RI event.
The sommeliers are out in force to taste what local vineyards such as Sakonnet Vineyards, Newport Vineyards and Greenvale Vineyards all of RI fame have to offer from their new vintages. Newport RI has so much to offer and has already this summer so this event is another highlight to the summer season.
Be prepared to enjoy both food and wine here because many celebrity chefs will be cooking up a great Newport storm of tasty delights with unlimited tastings of 800 brands of food, wine, beer and liqueurs. Isn't it fun to get
a chance to be up close and personal with the famous local chefs like Walter Potenza and Mary Ann Esposito who have helped all of us enjoy the good food of summer.
Every day this weekend is another theme at the Newport RI Winefest so make sure you take advantage of the wine tasting experiences this weekend has to offer in Newport. From Saturday samplings of high end reserve wines to Sunday's Champagne tasting and brunch with Food Network's Tyler Anderson.
And remember no matter what your parents said it's okay to spit here! Yes, good wine drinkers know when they are sampling a variety of wines it's the only way to keep the palate fresh and truly enjoy the real essence of each wine. Plus you don't want to drink and drive. Newport Winefest tickets are not cheap depending upon the daily event so be prepared to be able to part with the $50 - $175 a ticket for this event.
It's a great weekend to just enjoy the city of Newport RI also in all it's historic
presence, look at the great real estate here and walk the streets by the water. So this weekend it's time to swirl, sniff and sip the wines at the first ever wine tasting experience at the Newport RI Winefest from August 20-22nd 2010.
