We have a wonderful local radio station in Humble. It is KSBJ, 89.3 on our FM radio dial. They are a contemporary Christian Music station. KSBJ - God listens.

Every year KSBJ begins their continuous Christmas music the day after Thanksgiving and they continue it through Christmas Day. KSBJ really gets you in the spirit musically. And they remind us about the value of sharing what we have during this holiday season.

For the past 20 years, KSBJ has hosted a Giving Tree. Through the Giving Tree, needy families are connected with families that want to fulfill those needs with gifts and/or services. When you go to the website, the guidelines are there for nominating someone. And you can choose a category of item to give. And you can select an area of town to search for a recipient. This year social networking is being utilized to Tweet needs or share the needs on Facebook. What a wonderful way to use our online tools!

At the time of this post, there were 588 needs.

Also a picture of a white candy cane being filled up with red lines are an indication of the percentage of needs being filled. The candy cane is at 20% currently. The history of Humble Texas is rich in oil. (Black gold, Texas Tea) In fact, Exxon USA can trace its descent from the Humble Oil Company, a company named for the city of Humble. And by the way, Humble is really pronounced Umble - the H is silent. Whenever I see an oil well pump, I think of its connection to many towns in Texas - most importantly our town, Humble.

Mercer Arboretum & Botanic Gardens is located in Humble, Texas off of Aldine Westfield. This is a picture of the main building.

Aside from great flowers, they have some cute metal sculptures like this one of yellow flowers. There is another sculpture on the right, behind the ferns.

The Arboretum is very good about having labels for the numerous varieties of flowers and plants.

Two more sculptures. The artist is exceptionally good at using metal odds and ends that look like scrap metal and making it into art.

Here is an example of their wonderful landscaping, with the flowers, paved paths and trees. Also, you can see the left side of one of the greenhouses. They have planted the gardens so that there are flowers blooming all year round. I forgot to mention, they have an herb garden and a butterfly enclosure. Further back in the Arboretum is a water garden with stepping stones through the small ponds, and there are several hiking trails.

Harris County purchased the land from Thelma and Charles Mercer in 1974, and over the years have purchased more land to make this park a total of about 300 acres.
