Steve Saint at TRBC February 17, 2008, Lynchburg, Virginia

Debbie Malone, Realtor Lynchburg, Smith Mountain Lake, VA : Real Estate Agent in Lynchburg, VA

"He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot keep"

- Jim Elliot

Many of you may be familiar with the story of Jim Elliot and Nate Saint, two of the five missionaries who were murdered after spending months trying to reach the Auca Indians of Ecuador in 1956. Elisabeth Elliot and Rachel Saint, Nate's sister, later went to live with the tribe. Rachel stayed in Ecuador until her death in 1994. Steve Saint, Nate's son, was adopted by Mincaye, the man that killed his father. It's an unbelievable story of ultimate forgiveness. Follow the links to read this amazing story in depth.

On February 17th, Steve Saint along with Mincaye will be speaking at the 6pm evening service at Thomas Road Baptist Church. Like his father, Steve is an accomplished pilot. Along with Professor Don Fanning of Liberty University, Steve and his son partner to build planes to help provide an income for the Auca's (also called Waodani). If you've never read Unstilled Voices by Elisabeth Elliot, or haven't seen the movie The End of the Spear, I highly recommend both. If you are going to be in the Lynchburg, Virginia area, come out to hear this remarkable story.

Military Order of the Purple Heart Memorial - Lynchburg, VA Fundraiser January 31, 2008

Debbie Malone, Realtor Lynchburg, Smith Mountain Lake, VA : Real Estate Agent in Lynchburg, VA

Monument Terrace purple heart . Don't forget.

Monument Terrace, Lynchburg, Virginia MOPH

One of the things I love about Lynchburg is people who passionately believe in a cause. Ever since the start of the war in Iraq, a group of veterans and concerned citizens have been meeting on the steps of Monument Terrace and you will find them here every Friday from noon to one pm. Their goal is to recognize the sacrifice of those who have served in our military and to show support for our troops who are currently serving.

Steve Bozeman is one of these dedicated individuals. A former marine who was awarded two Purple Hearts, Steve is an amazing athlete who's participated in numerous marathons and holds the American record for completing 15 Double Ironman Triathlons. He carries the Marine Flag during the Virginia Ten-miler and Marine marathons. Steve is on the committee to erect a Purple Heart Memorial in Lynchburg http://www.purpleheart.org/. He and others have been tirelessly raising funds for the memorial which will be dedicated on Memorial Day, 2008. So far, $12,000 has been raised of the $16,000 goal. Steve sent me the following information:

The Purple Heart Memorial will be placed on upper plaza near Court St. and dedicated on Memorial Day 2008.

On the back of memorial, these words will be engraved, "Honoring all recipients of the U.S.A.'s oldest
military medal and remembering particularly here at Monument Terrace, the wounded and fallen of Lynchburg,
Va. and its immediate surroundings".
Also, on back will be engraved all the five military branches emblems in 5" diameters. The "Listening Post,"
familiarly known as "The Doughboy" was dedicated in 1926 to honor the men of Lynchburg who served in WWI
(1914 - 1918), of which 43 men were killed. Memorials honoring WWII, (182 killed), Korea (24 killed) and
Vietnam (27 killed) were dedicated in 1986 to honor those veterans. The Purple Heart Memorial will honor all
those 276 heroes from Lynchburg who paid the ultimate sacrifice for America's freedom.

How can you get involved? On January 31, 2008 News/Talk Radio WLNI (105.9) will be holding a fundraiser to
benefit the Purple Heart Memorial on their morning show from 6-10am. They will have 5 lines open to take
pledges and those scheduled to take calls are:
a mother of a soldier killed in Vietnam (Mrs. Ruth Taylor-Perry)
a sister of Marine killed (Mrs. Pat Childress)
a former POW/MIA (David Harker)
and a few other Vietnam vets that were awarded the Purple Heart Medal.
They will be interviewed by WLNI during the course of the 4 hour show.
Please call in at (434) 846-8255 & (866) 338-1059 to make a pledge to this worthy cause.

Lynchburg Virginia Housing Market - January 2008

Debbie Malone, Realtor Lynchburg, Smith Mountain Lake, VA : Real Estate Agent in Lynchburg, VA

There was a great article in the Lynchburg News & Advance Central Virginia Business section last week titled Weathering The Storm. The Lynchburg real estate market is small in comparison to many throughout Virginia with under 1600 single family homes currently listed. We've been fortunate that our local market has been insulated against the highs and lows others have experienced throughout the country. Lynchburg year to date sales through November 2007 were down almost 8% compared to the same period in 2006. However, in other local markets:

Roanoke Valley sales were down by 11% through November

Charlottesville sales were down by 25% through September

Compared to a national drop of 11% and 14.5% statewide, Lynchburg is in good shape.

More Facts:

- The median home price is up 2% over November 2006 while nationally they went down by 3%.

- From 2001-2005, the median price of a home in Lynchburg rose 25%, while the median price of a home in Northern Virginia rose 106%.

- Few local lenders participated in sub-prime loans. Bank of the James and First National Bank of Altavista did not offer sub-prime loans.

- RealtyTrac shows one foreclosure for every 20,000 homes in Lynchburg & the surrounding counties compared to one foreclosure for every 617 households nationally.

- There are 1547 single family homes currently on the market.

- Today, the median price for a home in Lynchburg is $249,656.

We have good reason to be optimistic for 2008- Lynchburg is a great place to call home!
