New Courthouse Victim Of The Economy

Denise Allen Realtor@ Chesapeake, Hampton Roads: Real Estate Agent in Chesapeake, VA

It's a shame but the proposed new courthouse could fall victim to the failing economy and a city overburdened with other projects. The biggest bill facing the city is the $45 million for the three story building. There are plenty of other projects that cost money including replacing the westbound lanes of the Churchland bridge. That could easily cost over $20 million. The courthouse is old, leaky and has several safety and design issues. Hopefully the city will be able to find a way to replace this aging building.

Building Gone But Church Lives On

Gene Allen Realtor Hampton Roads Real Estate: Real Estate Agent in Virginia Beach, VA

The Zion Baptist Church building was destroyed in a fire recently. The building had stood since 1894 but other buildings had served the church since 1865. Blacks had split off from the mother church for many reasons and was the first church owned in Portsmouth by blacks. The church meets in an auditorium at the Sheriff's Academy at Randolph and Green streets. The Rev. Thomas T. Shields thinks god doesn't want him to build a church building but to build ministries.

Waterfront Development To Be Guided

Gene Allen Realtor Hampton Roads Real Estate: Real Estate Agent in Virginia Beach, VA

The Planning Commission is is trying to make sure the waterfront is a community gathering place and not for inappropriate development. You could get an upscale haircut but not a tan. You may buy sweets from a bakery, art from a gallery but not get your shoes repaired. Those adult magazines, forget it. The city council needs to look at the changes and approve them.

Boat Tax Floating Away

Gene Allen Realtor Hampton Roads Real Estate: Real Estate Agent in Virginia Beach, VA

The dreaded boat tax may be going away. It has not raised any money and may actually be costing the city money to collect. Many boats have left for cities with lower taxes causing marinas and resturants around the city gasping for customers. If its broke, fix it.
