On Lewisburg's First Friday of the Month Celebration, the Greenbrier Valley Theatre (GVT) in Lewisburg, West Virginia has some exciting events for this first October weekend.

First, not to be outdone by Hollywood's Sidewalk Hall of Fame, the GVT's "Celebration of Stars" will be on Friday, October 2, at 5:30 pm., with the unveiling of five new Sidewalk Stars in front of GVT. The recipients are Roger and LewAnne Cerasoli, Jeannine Y. Francis, Paul and Ann Moran, Barbara Nissman, and Betty S. and Bruce Randles. A reception follows this event.

Second, on Friday evening, October 2 at 8:00 pm - the local rock and blues group "Sweety" will be performing. The band members include Christine Campbell, Bill Clapham, Virgil Kelly, Ben Hunt, and Philip McLaughlin. Admission is $10 at the door.

Third, on Sunday, October 4 at 7:30 pm, a live performance by the Manhattan Jazz Quartet, with special guest Royce Campbell. Band members include Gary Klein, Tony Hayworth, Bob Peckman, and Peter Matthews. Admission is $10 at the door.

The HospiceCare's Upcoming Fundraising Event --- the 11th Annual "Toast to Hospice" -- will be on Friday, November 6, 2009. This event will take place at The Alumni Center of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, Lewisburg, West Virginia.

HospiceCare programs include care for the terminally ill that are provided in the patients' homes, assisted living and nursing home facilities, inpatient units in hospitals and at the Hubbard Hospice House. HospiceCare also offers Kids Path (a program for children who are afflicted with a life threatening illness but have not been diagnosed as terminal), palliative care consulting, and adult daycare for individuals suffering from Alzheimer's disease and dementia. HospiceCare provides services in sixteen counties in West Virginia, and there are over 300 active volunteers on the roster today.

The Greenbrier Valley Theatre’s production of “SUDS” opened this past week. I had the opportunity to see SUDS: The Rocking 60’s Musical Soap Opera. The music and performances were great.

Sara DelBeato, Maria Maloney, Lourelene Snedeker, and Michael Sharp star in Greenbrier Valley Theatre’s production of SUDS: The Rocking 60’s Musical Soap Opera. SUDS was written by Steve Gundersen, Bryan Scott and Melinda Gild; directed by Cathey Sawyer, and musically directed by Jeremy Fenn-Smith.

SUDS takes a trip back to the 1960's with Cindy on her birthday upset because her boyfriend breaks up with her. One song leads to another as Cindy, with the help of her guardian angels, tries to find true love in the laundromat. Featuring over 50 of the era's greatest hits including “A Little Bit of Soap”, "Chapel Of Love," "It's My Party," "Respect," "We Can Work it Out,” and “Are You Lonesome Tonight.”

The show was great, funny, and made me want to get up and dance, although I held back and stayed in my seat.

On Lewisburg's First Friday, September 4, from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm., the Cooper Gallery is hosting an artist reception for Max Hayslette. Max Hayslette is a former West Virginian. He was born in Rupert in 1930. He had his first art show at the age of 16 in Rainelle, West Virginia. This year, Mr. Hayslette celebrates his 80^th birthday.

Max Hayslette completed his studies at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1952, where he studed with Alexander Archipenko and Egon Weiner. He considers himself a romantic artist, one who seeks to give his work a warm and gentle, spiritual quality. His dreamy landscapes evoke sentiments of warmth, comfort and familiarity as they transport the viewer to numerous exotic destinations in the far corners of the world.

Max Hayslette is very versatile in his style. He paints traditional landscapes, as well as modern abstracts. Click here to read more about the artist. Below are two of his paintings that will be showcased at the Cooper Gallery.

My husband and I have had the pleasure of meeting Max Hayslette many times at the Cooper Gallery. In 2007, we purchased one of his art pieces… an Italian scene.

Marilyn Cooper, the proprietor, has been doing artist receptions since opening her gallery in 1995. Max Hayslette’s art has been showcased in the Coopery Gallery since 2004.
