Exciting things are happening over at the Hillhurst United Church, in Kensington. With the help of Minister, John Pentland and strong support with in the ranks, Hillhurst United Church promised to put words into action with a plan to increase the amount of affordable housing with an action which involves almost every person who calls, Hillhurst United Church home.
Hillhurst United Church is an affirming ministry that strives strives to accept one another, and ecourages participation of all persons regardless of age, gender identity, health, race, sexual orientation, differing abilities, religious or ethnic background or economic circumstance.
Finding Affordable housing has long been a problem for Calgary's many low income residents who have found they are just unable to keep up with today's high cost of living. This past year alone, through the generousity of the congregation to the tune of 1.3 million dollars Hillhurst United Church has come one step closer to making their Affordable Housing project a reality.
Hillhurst is still quite a way from their target to create new affordable housing apartments. They are positive that other generous folks from around the city will come and join them to create this dream, which is badly needed in Calgary.
The building is always buzzing with excitement, especially on Sunday mornings and the people come in droves to hear popular Minister John Pentland who has a delightful way of speaking from the heart and inspiring people to greatness. With the help of Marsha Mah Poy (Tireless office Administrator and Social Butterfly), Joanne Anquist (Dedicated & Creative Service Animator with a beautiful voice), Justin Macosky (Choir Director Extraordinaire), and Marc Rajotte (On the keys) along with countless others so numberous as to mention, who work very hard behind the scenes, the services at Hillhurst United Church will almost alwasy have you leaving you feeling that you have just experienced a life-changing moment.
If you've always wondered how you will make an impact on affordable housing in Calgary, or other important projects such as Inn from the Cold, I'm sure that John Pentland would love to have you come down one Sunday morning to see just exactly what they are doing to effect social justice everywhere. Their services start at 10:45 each Sunday, (10AM in July & August)
Proposed Design
The Hillhurst United Church was constructed in 1904, celebrated its hundredth birthday in 2004! While it is showing the odd wrinkle, it feels and acts, very young and exuberant. If you'd like to check them out, the address is 1227 Kensington Close, N.W. If you look really closely, you might even see me, up in the choir loft soaking in all the goodness around me.
