Light Rail Costs In Flux

A huge project like the light rail system in Norfolk called the TIDE needs to be transparent. Apparently Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) doesn't think so. Council members want numbers and projections and are not getting them. The city nees to stay on top of this issue as many millions of dollars are at stake. HRT says it is hard to come up with exact numbers as things are in flux like the station design and parking at the Military Highway sight. Council needs a handle on the funding and they need it real soon.

Even Simpler Apertures

Bruce Mohan gave a good explanation and even provided great pictures on apertures. Because I have a hard time with them still here is my way of thinking of them.

Small number = larger f/stop = shallow depth of field (focus from front to back)

Large number = smaller f/stop = large depth of field (focus from front to back)

If you look at the picture above, you will see that at f 1.4 the aperture is wide open and lets in a huge amount of light and at f/ 22 the aperture is closed up tight and lets in only a little light.

I think we have all heard of pinpoint accuracy and it applies in photography as well. A pinpoint gives you the best depth of field (yes I know there are other factors).

This is really a middle of the pack depth of field taken at f 4. This guy hangs out in my backyard in Virginia Beach in Glenwood.

Portsmouth to wipe out the homeless

This sounds pretty bad but what it means is that the city of Portsmouth will enact a 10 year plan to wipe out the homeless in the city. I said it again wrong. Portsmouth wants to collect better data on the homeless, focus on prevention, expand housing, and identify other resources to help with the problem. Part of the plan is to commit money to pay for single room occupancy apartments to get people off the streets. It is a plan and even if it doesn't work fully it will certainly be a start.

More condos for Wards Corner

Arthur Collins is going to build a 385 unit condominium complex near Wards Corner in Norfolk. The $60 million project is on Newport Ave and will replace the Riverside Terrace Apartments. The new development has views of the Elizabeth River and will be called WaterMark. The condos will be built in phases over a period of years. This seems to be a pretty bold move in this real estate market and let's hope it works for him.
