Age 55+ Communities in FLORIDA ~ Brevard County ~ all FL Counties

55+ communities in Florida and Brevard County

With so many baby boomers retiring in Florida. the request for 55+ communities comes up
frequently. I wanted to provide a comprehensive list, but found such a list very illusive. I
came across a government site which indeed provides a list of these communities. The link
below is specifically for Brevard County, but if you use the search field you can research any
county in Florida.

Sorry, the link doesn't seem to be working so here's the list for Brevard County. At the end
of this list are links to all other counties in Florida with 55+ communities.

Port Canaveral #1 Cruise Port in THE WORLD - Brevard County FL

Port Canaveral #1

Carnival Cruise Ship docked in Key West

Last Friday the Space Coast Association of Realtors sponsored a luncheon which featured our very own Port Canaveral - the soon to be #1 cruise port in THE WORLD. Ralph Kennedy, Member Canaveral Port Authority gave a compelling talk about the future of The Port and it's impact on the local economy. Most people think of the Space Program as the heavy hitter in local employment. I was happily surprised to hear that Port Canaveral (directly and indirectly) employs some 23,000 people. The expansion of the Port will create an additional 3,500 jobs. The impact on the local economy is huge with more than $43 million paid in local taxes and $87 million going to the state of Florida. I never knew! Did you? I don't want to bore you with a lot of figures but this one is staggering: The Port's contribution to Brevard County is more than $3 billion which accounts for 10% of the county's total output.

Part of the expansion is brought about by commitments from the large cruise lines like Disney, Carnival, and Royal Caribbean who will be bringing in 3 of the new super ships which carry 4,000 passengers each. Plans include a new cruise terminal, fuel tank depot, hotel with convention center, parking garage, restaurants and retail space with the goal of getting visitors out into the community to experience all we have to offer.

In a time where cut-backs are the buzz-word of the day, it's very uplifting to hear about expansions on the scale of our local Port Authority at Port Canaveral in Brevard County, FL. It's a win/win for everyone!

As an FYI for all those who need a vacation - would that be you :-) some of the best deals in cruising are out of this port. I know for a fact since I booked a fabulous 4 niter that's right around the corner, can hardly wait!

If you're flying into Orlando International Airport, the distance is about 45 miles with drive time being about the same - 45-50 minutes. If you're wondering what's to do besides Disney, please read one of my others posts outlining some of our fun things!

My Town - TITUSVILLE FL - C'mon...let me show you around (LOCALISM FEATURED)

We moved to Titusville almost 6 years ago. I'm a city
girl, born and raised in Montreal; lived in St. Petersburg,
Boca Raton, Ft. Lauderdale (Lighthouse Point) and West
Palm Beach (Lake Worth) areas. Point being these are
large areas, full of infrastructure, shopping, restaurants
and things to do at every turn. Titusville's a small town
by comparison - about 45,000 folks call it home. It took
some time but I finally feel at home here myself. At first
all I really liked was the lack of traffic which is a big reason
why we moved north. As the first holiday season approached
I began to have second thoughts about the decision. There
were clearly only two choices - sit around and mope or get
out there and make things happen. Being a spirited Scottish
lass I opted for door #2. We hosted a few small parties,
invited neighbors, and friends from down south, started
mingling and actively going out to discover our new back
yard. Incidentally, I don't believe a problem exists that
can't be remedied with food, wine, and friends!
We're talking localism here ;-)

So - here we are six years later. Let me share some of the things which are special to Titusville.

Emma Parrish Theater Today - Gail MacMillan 1905 - Emma Parrish was called The Magnolia Theatre

My personal favorite - The Historic Emma Parrish Theater
The theater is adorable, small, great productions with mostly local volunteer talent.
For the price of one play in Broward County you can buy a whole season (6 plays) at
Emma Parrish, but hurry - seats are going fast! 2008 season tickets are currently on
sale, I have front row center - it's terrific!

Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge occupies 140,000 acres of
estuaries and marshlands, dunes and hammocks and alligators,
lots of alligators. There is a 7 mile (one-way) self guided drive
thru the habitat - please don't forget your camera. Also has hiking
trails and the nearby Manatee Observation Deck.

Snowy Egret - Gail MacMillan Love how this little guy carries his camouflage on his back - Gail MacMillan

West Indian Manatee - Gail MacMillan Florida Bald Eagle - Gail MacMillan

Canaveral National Seashore Playalinda, 24 miles of unspoiled beach not one single condo - daily fee $3.00 per person or $35.00 for an annual pass (no fee change in 2008). There are several parking areas with toilet only. Be aware the last area on the route is a nude beach. Playalinda is the beach where each year, from May through August, thousands ofLoggerhead, leatherback, and green sea turtles come ashore to lay theireggs. Each turtle can lay approximately 600 eggs. Guided tours are available in this environmentally sensitive habitat.

Enchanted Forest Sanctuary Part of Brevard County's Environmentally
Endangered Lands Program it features walking and learning trails thru scrub,
mesic and hydric ecosystems. This area in Brevard is very high for Florida.
You can descend 20 feet into what I call the Grand Canyon of Brevard. It's
a very pleasant way to spend a morning or afternoon.

No - I didn't forget NASA and the Kennedy Space Center
(this website is awesome). I was leaving the best for last.
If you're interested, here's the launch schedule - what a
sight to see and hear. I live 8 miles from the Visitor Center
Complex. When a launch goes up, I simply open the front
door and wait for it to clear the treetops - it's amazing.
Usually though, we drive down to the Indian River, scout
for a much coveted parking spot, mingle with locals and
travelers alike, and wait for the show to begin.

These are the biggies; there is so much more in the way
of parks, museums, wildlife and birding festivals. People
come from all over the world to glimpse our exotica, it's
very beautiful and peaceful....And How about those
Roseate Spoonbills! This photographer is exceptional,
his name is Bill Schmoker.
Here's a link to his website: http://schmoker.org

Since moving here Dec. 2002 the town has grown some.
Believe it or not, the hurricanes that ravaged us for two
seasons (2004-2005) have had a positive effect.
Renovations started popping up all over town and the
general cleanup sparked an interest in many to spruce
up their own abodes. Several new businesses opened
including a much needed shopping area which is in the
final phase of placing tenants. We're still small town,
but we are growing - slowly. TITUSVILLE - my town!

WARNING: Malware - Trojan.Renos

spyware icon
This morning I had the unpleasant experience of this malware.
I'll describe it's behavior so you'll recognize it if it lands on your
computer. It operates as a series of pop-up screens which mimic
the look of Windows Security Center. I ran a virus scan but nothing
showed up. Still something just didn't feel right so I compared the
logos which were close, but not the same. There were 6 or 7 warning
screens which eventually all lead to the pop-up requiring registration
for the latest updated Windows Security Center(?) - your first red
flag. In the bottom right toolbar you'll see a red circle with a white X
as well as a shield which looks like the Windows Security Center icon.
It's tricky though, because it describes it's own behavior while IT's
happening. Arrgg!!! Another screen will start scanning for spyware,
it's bogus as well. It's very confusing - just stay calm. I tried going
to Microsoft's website but received a message "Navigation Blocked"
due to unstable internet browsing. During all this, my system kept
shutting down and restarting. I think you have enough here to
recognize it if it shows up. The fix:

I ran Windows Defender 3 times only to have the malware come
back. It seems it just keeps replicating itself. I tried to reconfigure
the start-ups in MSCONFIG only to have the icons reappear upon
restarting. Finally I disabled Windows Defender and downloaded
Computer Associates Anti Spyware which seems to have put an end
to the problem - perhaps! Here is an example of what you might
see - but the messages I received were only similar in nature.

This trojan can also change your home page, default search engine,
internet security zone settings and enable ActiveX controls. It's a
ploy to get you to download it's rogueware and it attaches to the
registry. It appears Windows Defender was unable to prevent this
malware from reasserting itself. A virus scan will not pick this up
because it's not really a virus - it's pop-up malware and requires
anti-spy software to remove it. I hope this description helps should
you encounter this event. Feel free to contact me if you have any
questions.
