Thank You Mapquest ! !

Some time ago, I contacted Mapquest to obtain permission to use an Oregon Map on my ActiveRain profile page. This turned out to be a much bigger task than I anticipated. The process has taken several months but yesterday, I received my golden ticket....Yea! Mapquest has finally approved me : )

I wanted to share this with all of you because I often run on to blogs or websites that are using maps and photos. I wonder how many of the authors have taken the time to obtain necessary permission or are aware of the fines involved for copyright infringement. This is a serious matter and one that everyone in the blogsphere needs to be aware of.

To give you a better idea, I have included the email I received from Mapquest. Please, please, please....... DO NOT VIOLATE COPYRIGHT LAWS. Not only can you be prosecuted by the owner of said images, copyright infringement can get you kicked off of Active Rain.

May 30, 2007

Dear Ms. Fronabarger,

MapQuest Permission Team

As you can see, permission and use are taken very seriously by MapQuest and many others. It is better to ask and be told "no" than to take a chance and be caught. Anyone who thinks it's not a big deal should talk to Lenn Harley. Taking the time to do this right benefits everyone. I am extremely proud of my profile page and feel that this addition of information makes it even better for my clients.

Cool idea for building...check it out.

Shiping ContainersA friend was over the other day and we got talking about about used shipping cargo containers.

Most often, the container arrives at its destination and is of no further use. Although many businesses use them as storage, there is another great use for them and it's building homes. The benefits are wonderful and innovative and the idea is being introduced around the country.

Excerpt from Carol Lloyd, SFGate.com article-

"In this era of scouring the earth for the magic bullet in home building, few ideas can compete with the weird, pragmatic beauty of the used shipping container. Cheap, strong and easily transportable by boat, truck or train, these big steel structures now litter the ports of America as mementos of our Asian-trade imbalance. (Many more full containers arrive on our shores than depart, so ports either ship them back empty -- to the tune of about $900 per -- or sell them.)

Hurricane proof, flood proof, fire proof, these metal Lego blocks are tough enough to be stacked 12-high empty -- and thus can be used in smaller multistory buildings. Used containers (which can be picked up for $1,500 to $2,000) often have teak floors and sometimes are insulated. The bright orange, blue and rust corrugated boxes may not appeal to everyone. But contemporary hipsters find them not just the ultimate in postmodern appropriation but aesthetically pleasing as well.

And even though containers have little of the crunchy nostalgia of the hay-bale house or the yurt, they trump most other forms of green building because, in the current economy, they are virtually a waste product. Making a building (which can last and last) out of what is essentially a huge piece of industrial detritus takes recycling to a new level."

Check these out-

Creating a seller/buyer toolchest for your website

Gilbert Big Boy Tool Chest No. 3On my website, I try to include information that I would use if I were the consumer. I offer a seller/buyer tool chest that does just that. Included is everything from mortgage lenders, banks, title and exchange companies to vendors offering services in everything from windows, doors, decks, painting and cabinet refacing to landscaping and concrete repair. Many of the companies I refer come from my own personal experience in having used them or from a previous building experience with my husband's construction firm. Some companies are referred based on my having spent time researching what the company is about, local connections, how long in business and the product and customer service history.

A great way to get this information is to visit company booths at trade fairs, expos, home & garden shows and the like. My recent trip to the Central Oregon Home & Garden Show netted me 57 new businesses to add my tool chest as well as some great contacts. WOW! This is a smart way to network, refer and also gain the referrals of local Bend companies who often are utilized in a real estate transaction.

We all know that moving to a new area can be somewhat discerning when you don't know where to go to get the job done right. The same is true for sellers who need work done before marketing their property. This is just one more way to help my Central Oregon clients find what they are looking for and also promote local businesses in my area. It is a WIN-WIN situation for all.
