As one of Alaska's most unique towns and home to famous Santa Claus house, North Pole is still about 1,700 miles south of the Earth's geographic North Pole.
North Pole has events and activities year round including summertime attractions for tourists and residents in town and from nearby Fairbanks. About two miles south of North Pole is the Corps of Engineers Chena River Flood Control Project, which offers tours in the summer. The nearby Chena Lakes recreation area is popular for skiing in the winter and swimming and boating in the summer. North Pole also provides a bus service from Fairbanks on the Green Line.
Probably North Pole's biggest attraction is a gift shop named Santa Claus House, the modern-day incarnation of a trading post established in the town's early days. The Santa Claus House is known for the world's largest fiberglass statue of Santa Claus outside. Prior to Christmas each year, the USPS post office
in North Pole receives hundreds of thousands of letters to Santa Claus, and thousands more from people wanting the town's postmark on their Christmas greeting cards to their families. It advertises the ZIP code 99705 as the ZIP code of Santa. A local mechant named Con Miller moved his store to North Pole and began a tradition that is still going on today. Miller had already developed a reputation for playing Santa Claus to the Native children in the Alaskan Villages, and so he named his new trading post Santa Claus House.
North Pole is always in the Christmas spirit with Santa Claus Lane, St. Nicholas Drive, Snowman Lane, and Kris Kringle Drive. Street lights in the city are decorated in a candy cane motif, and many local businesses have similar decorations. The city's firetrucks and ambulances are all red, while the police cars are green and white.
About 12 miles south of Fairbanks, North Pole encourages it's vendors and business owners to carry out the Christmas theme year round. Since it is about midway between Ft. Wainwright and Eielson A.F.B. on the Richardson Highway, it is a bedroom community for military families who prefer to live off base.
North Pole has a large residential population hidden away. Their first 71 room hotel (North Pole Hotel) was due to open in 2009. There is also Beaver Lake Resort and Jolly Acres Motel as well as darling little bed & breakfasts.
Alaska is known as "Land of the Midnight Sun" because the sun is up 24 hours per day in parts of Northern Alaska where there is no night sky for many weeks. In the Summer the gardens and flowers flurish in the 24 hours of daylight.
North Pole's shortest day of the year is just under 4 hours of daylight on December 21st, while the longest day of the year, June 21st, is almost 22 hours of daylight. Temperatures can dip as low as -78 degrees in the winter, to a high of 95 degrees during our summers and we are prepared for it all.

If you want to purchase Fairbanks real estate but fear that poor credit will prevent you from getting financing, don't be afraid. First understand this.
So the deck of cards is already stacked against you. 130 cards that can destroy your credit and only 5 cards that can strengthen your credit. Sounds like a game you don't even want to play does it?
First things first. Obtain a copy of your credit report. How to do this? Just go into your local lender and initiate a credit application for a home mortgage. They will pull credit for you and in most cases address the issues on your credit and give guidance as to how to improve the score based on your current financial situation. Then contact any creditors with outstanding balances and explain your current financial situation. Explain that you are willing to work with them if they can settle on a lesser amount rather than the full outstanding bill. Creditors if convinced they will not get anymore than what you are offering right now oftentimes will take 30 to 40 percent of the total balance due.
Once that is settled and you have made your final payment, have them issue a signed letter stating that the debt has been satisfied. This is crucial. You need proof to send to the credit bureaus to get them to update your credit record. In the eyes of a lender, this is a better method of rectifying your credit than setting up a payment plan though a consumer counseling service.
By resolving your own credit problems using the partial payment approach, it demonstrates to lenders your ability to be a responsible credit user. In addition to avoiding the consumer counseling services, you should also avoid filing bankruptcy if at all possible. This act will stay on your credit for a period of 5 to 10 years depending on your state.
One effective method to redeem your credit status is to go get a secured credit card. Simply just put a deposit down with the bank that you are applying to for the card and the amount that you have in the account is the limit that is on your card. There is no risk to the bank and you get to build credit again. We always encourage that you let your Realtor refer you to a local lender. They know the local banks that have the ability to get borrowers financed even without "perfect" credit.
So now that you have began the process of fixing your credit. Make sure to make every payment in a timely fashion. In other words...DON'T BE LATE. Banks who have given another chance to someone with a history of late payments have no patience with someone who doesn't show they are willing to make an honest, hard change. So when you have demonstrated a pristine record with no payments being late for a year or two. Then you might be able to refinance at rate better than the one you have now. It normally will depend on how much your credit score has improved.
