Historic Malbis is a Planned Unit Development (PUD) just south of Interstate 10 in Daphne, Alabama. Originally designed to accommodate retail space, places of worship, an Assisted Living Facility, tons of green space - both in the boulevards and the reserved parks, and various styles of residences, it has come close to reaching its goal. The residences here offer so many different choices. From small, zero lot line cottages to magnificent estate homes on Jason Malbis Boulevard, to planned condominiums and just about everything in between, many people choose Historic Malbis in Daphne, Alabama, for its great location and the abundant choices in home designs.
There is an Architectural Review Board, and all building plans must be approved by them, a Homeowner's Association that is active in the community, a lovely Assisted Living Facility, a tot lot for the kids, and a gorgeous restored historic landmark that serves as a clubhouse, or meeting house, for the community. I know how lovely it is, as I actually held an art show with several other artists many moons ago, when the Clubhouse was still the old Malbis Plantation Nursery Office.
Historic Malbis Plantation was settled in 1907 when Jason Malbis took a boat from Mobile, Alabama and began purchasing the land that would become a working Greek Plantation, housing and supporting families and singles, who in turn worked on the plantation. There was a dairy, a bakery, a restaurant, hotel, and living quarters - dorms for the gentlemen and ladies who were unmarried while families lived in single family homes. The crowning glory is the Greek Orthodox Church, with its gold leaf enhanced frescoes, brilliant mosaics and stained glass windows in the church pinnacle.
While no longer a working plantation, the planned community of Historic Malbis, I feel would have made Jason Malbis proud. The Planned Unit Development at Historic Malbis, in Daphne Alabama, would have suited his vision quite well, as it was planned for many different kinds of living, and excludes none. The people who live there, love it there, telling me often that they cherish the new vision aligned with the old dream of Jason Malbis. Additionally, Historic Malbis, while beautiful and functional, is almost exactly centered between Mobile and Pensacola for an easy work commute. When you turn off Highway 90, or Highway 181 into Historic Malbis, you can't help but breathe a sign of relief as you enter a sanctuary away from the bustle of the rest of the world.
