Last night we attended "The Grand Christmas Tree Lighting" at The Wharf in Orange Beach, Alabama!

It was a very nice event, with Santa Clause arriving on the Orange Beach firetruck coming down Main Street with his cheery voice shouting "Merry Christmas" to all the children!

There was a large crowd that filled the streets and everyone joined in the countdown as the switch was pulled and the very tall and beautiful tree burst into an array of bright twinkling white lights!

All of the children were then invited to visit with Santa on his sleigh and have their annual Santa photos made. And just between you and me, even at my age, I can still remember how exciting that moment is - to climb up on Santa's knee and share with him what a good little boy or girl you have been all year..... and tell him what you want for him to bring you in reward!

"Hey, Santa, I have been a very good girl this year!"

They had the speakers on with children singing Christmas Carols which really added to the spirit of this event. And as the crowd dispersed all of the shop, store and restaurant owners of The Wharf welcomed them with OPEN doors and were delighted to have them visit!

For me personally it was nice to actually feel like Christmas was beginning. You see normally I would be at home in Shelby County, Alabama putting out my Christmas decor and lighting my own tree, but this year we had decided to "shake it up" a bit and spend Thanksgiving at the beach!

It has been a wonderful time with lots of reasons to be thankful! We have enjoyed good food and good times with dear friends surrounded by the beauty of white sand beaches, palm trees and the ocean breeze on our face.

But the time has come to return home and began the Christmas holidays with our friends and family in our hometown of Birmingham.

I am looking forward to the Pelham Christmas Tree Lighting and the Helena Christmas Parade! And all of the Christmas lunches and parties with friends. But most of all - gathering together with our family on Christmas Eve with the Christmas tree twinkling, a nice Christmas dinner, listening to Christmas music and just plain ole enjoying each other!

After you see the pictures, you will know what I am talking about! Additionally, the resort is just across the street from the beach. In other words, you get the best of both worlds. There are fabulous waterfront views with a marina open for guests to fish, crab and boat while the beach is only steps away.

Guests just don't want to hear it. That is until they stay there. If we can find a open ear, the guests leave and often say "you were right!"

Interestingly enough, we have found that second-home end users prefer the bay side over the beach side. They cite lower crowds, views and the boating/marina capabilities as reasons for perferring this side of the bay. Plus, they can just walk across the street to enjoy the beach.

Now, I am not saying that people don't want to buy on the beach or that they shouldn't! I am just pointing out that there are other ways to enjoy the beach and often at a very attractive price point. Check out the Bella Luna in Orange Beach Al at

Another favorite is O'Choppers Irish Deli offering that Pub style dining but don't be fooled, this fine establishment was opened by Chopper himself. Chopper gained his celebrity when he was the manager at Tacky Jack's and aside from his charming personality he has a special touch with fine cuisine! Lester's on Canal Road offers a wonderful menu and most often some entertainment too, and they always have the football game on. On the Beach Road don't miss Gino's, Live Bait, The Hang Out and so on and so on....Get my drift? You will not be hungry on the Gulf Coast!

The Bella Luna in Orange Beach Alabama, has set the standard for condos along the gulf coast. The building is 14 stories tall and a parking deck replaces where once developers started the 1st floor units. When you drive over the Perdido Pass, the building is one of the first things that you will notice. The Bella Luna is sleek, curved, and has the appearance that it could be Stainless Steel. When you drive through the gated entrance you can tell you have arrived somewhere special.
