Welcome to My Home

Here's some tips to help create a Welcoming Environment when selling or living in your home.

  • A woven mat, pot of flowers or a fresh coat of paint on a door are all details to create a friendly entry way.
  • Is there room in a front closet or a peg or coat rack in a front room?  If so, offer to hang up your guest's coat or purse.
  • Let the sunshine in.  Nothing can make a room brighter and cheerier than natural sunlight.  So off with those dark, heavy drapes and on with something bright and airy.
  • Lighting is one thing you don't want to skimp on.  For a well-lit room, you'll need overhead lighting, task lighting - for reading and such - and accent lighting.  For and easy designer touch, try and up-light behind a potted plant.  Hanging mirrors can also visually enlarge a space and reflect light.
  • Real estate agents recommend that home sellers bake cookies before an open house.  This is because nothing says hospitality like homemade cooking.  You can also count on fresh flowers, candles and potpourri to a a welcoming touch.
  • Even if you don't have a separate guest room, try to clear out a drawer for overnight visitors so they have a place to put things.  Provide guests with fresh towels and maybe even travel sized toiletries, so they feel more at home.

Something fun:

Creating History...Start a guest book.  Make a visit to your home a special occasion.  Invite your guests to sign a blank notebook; provide room for their name, date and why they came.
