Hampton Beach New Hampshire ~ Sand Sculpture Contest!

Hampton Beach New Hampshire

Hampton Beach New Hampshire has loads of summer fun scheduled all summer long every year! This year is a little more special in that it's the100th Anniversary Sand Sculpture
"100th Anniversary Celebration of the Hampton Beach Village District" of Hampton NH.

Firetruck and Lottery Sculptures

To kick off this year's special celebration, Hampton Beach held their 'Seventh Annual Hampton Beach Master Sand Sculpting Contest". And what scultping masterpieces they were, too! WOW!

Hampton Beach Sand Sculpture Parade

The Master Sculptors who take part in this event come from all over North America
. This year's competitors hailed from Florida, Massachusetts, New York, Ontario, Quebec, Texas, and Ohio. Many of these competitors have been competiting for years, and out of the 13 master sculptors taking part this year, five of them are considered to be the strongest carvers in the world.

Hampton Beach NH Sand Sculpture

To start the competition, 10 tons of sand was delivered for each competitor, and they each were assigned to a 16' x 16' plot area. This sand comes from one of the local sand pits.

Competitors are each provided at least two 55 gallon drums of water, and shared hoses for their areas. The only other material allowed is Elmer's Glue, or some other bio-degradable similar product, to help preserve completed sculptures.

Hampton Beach - "Every Duck's Dream"

For creating their sculptures, no molds of any kind are allowed, however they can use wooden or plastic forms filled with sand and water to help gain the desired height needed for their creations. Platforms can be used to carve from the top down, and then the platforms are removed as they move down the sculpture.Hampton Beach NH - "Facing Yourself" Sculpture

Each competitor has an allotted 21 hours over 3 days to complete their sculpture. At exactly 4pm on Saturday, the horn sounds loudly for the competitors to cease working and begin picking up their tools, etc.

We were there for the last hour of the voting for the "People's Choice Award", and saw the organizers notifying each competitor when they had one hour left, then 30 minutes, and then 10 minutes. As they approached the final countdown, voices all over the place could be heard counting down the last 30 seconds before the horn sounded. It was kind of exciting to see everyone scrambling to get those last little touches completed, and to see those voting in the "People's Choice" hurrying to make their selections, too!

Hampton Beach NH Sculpture Viewing

Despite the cloudly overcast and somewhat chilly weather, Hampton Beach was packed with visitors and locals alike, all craining our necks to get as much as we could of each of these amazing sand sculptures. It was absolutely fascinating to think each of these was actually carved solely of sand - the detail was amazing on some of these!

Take this tour below to see each of the winning Master Sculptures in this fun contest, as well as some of the other entries - amazing detail in these sand sculptures!

Ann.... awesome pictures. Where is your sand castle?  ;o)   I love seeing these down at the beach. It's amazing what you can do with sand and water. ;o)  I'll be down the shore this weekend for a whole week with my nieces and nephews. Maybe I can impress them with my own sand castle...  lol   Thanks for sharing this.

Hi Jeff - thanks for reading, and I bet you can build quite a nice sand castle yourself!  It was fun to see each of these in person, and of course, the pictures here just don't do them justice.  I wanted to highlight the winners of this contest, so I used those pictures in the tour - hope you had a chance to check that out to see just how incredibly talented those sculptors really are!

Thanks again!

thanks for the post- you know I have a thing for sand!! :-)   The artistic talent displayed is superb and jaw dropping!

(06/24/07 12:41PM) — Jay Beckingham

pretty cool stuff, thanks for the effort.

Hi Ann-

Those sculptures are fantastic -

I actually tried to do that once, but being a phenominal klutz - well things didn't turn out too well....

I do much better with 'minimalism' - you know, fill bucket, invert bucket, remove bucket - perfect!

Ann~

If I were looking for a fun place to be this summer (other than my amazing mountains) I'd hop right on over to your neck of the woods. Your post is like a mini-vacation for me. And, of course, you know I love the pictorial format.

Great post!!   Wonderful pictures. Thanks for sharing this.

Ann,

So wish I had the time to go up there and see the sculptures! Love Hampton Beach! Nice job! :)

Michele - after your summer beach post, I'm not surprised you like this one!  ;-)
You should have seen these sculptures in person - they were so precise and meticulous in their work.

Jay - it was cool to see for sure!  Thanks for stopping by another of my posts!

Ann

Hi Marc - I think my best efforts would be along the lines of your 'minimalism' description.  We could have our own contest in that category!  ;-)

Barbara - many thanks for reading my post, and I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures!

Ann

janeAnne - vacation away my friend!!  I do hope that one day you do manage to find your way up to this great area - would love to show you around.  I do agree that your mountains are a pretty awesome vacation as well!

Suzanne - Hampton Beach is a beautiful spot - gorgeous white sandy beach and all the fun beach-y stuff that goes along with it!

Ann

They do some amazing work up there... The only thing I usually see is the long line at the tolls.

Hi Dan - You just have to know either the secret times to come up this way, or the secret routes that locals take to avoid those lines at the toll booths......   ;-)

Ann

Ann - Absolutely Amazing! I have never seen someone create a sand sculpture, except my kids, Nothing like this. We had a mall in Phoneix when I lived there which had enormous sand sculptires preserved. The detail is astonishing. I don't have the patience to do something like that! Thanks for sharing-the video was great!

Hey Paula - I'd never seen anything like this in person until we were there yesterday for the finishing touches.  It was amazing to watch them work with their tools to finesse the last touches to each of these.  My sculptures, if I ever did any, would closely resemble upside down buckets.....  ;-)

Glad you enjoyed the video, too!

Monika and I were down there this morning and it was a beautiful day and we have a ton of pictures. We also saw the catamarans sailing around.

Hi Jay - I figured you were headed that way today.  Monika had mentioned you guys might go down.  I almost went back down there this morning myself - it was such a gorgeous day today for that.  The catamarans weren't out when we were there yesteday - that would have been fun to see if they had been.

Ann

This is sand sculpture week...I loved watching them when I went on Wednesday and then again today. Awesome. What a talented group of people.

Ann these sand sculptures are amazing! We don't have anything like this in the desert. Love all the photos.

Hi Monika - guess that happens when it's a really fun event taking place!  It was really neat to see all those very different sculptures in person, wasn't it?

Ashley - I'm glad you enjoyed this post!  Those pictures really don't do those works of art justice at all, they were do detailed and meticulously crafted.

Ann

Ann.. I have learned to travel on the off hours but sometimes I need to get back for Monday morning and southbound on Sunday afternoon gets tough.  It was nice a few years ago when they hit you for double going north and didn't stop the southbound traffic.

This is really amazing. I love sand sculpture pictures.

I grew up in CT and visited the beach part of New Hampshire before. Pretty small coastline for NH. That must have taken up most of the beach there :) ok ok I know its a little longer than that, but still not too much coastline. I actually had some cousins that owned a home on a big cliff overlooking the beach. It was very beautiful. They live in FL now.

Hello Brother Dan!  Yep the off hours are when the locals travel, too!  It seems they have to make a change every few years on the tolls - who knows what it will be next year!  Next time you're up this way, let me know.

Angie - I know exactly the cliff area you're referring to - very nice up there and what incredible views!  When we were down checking out these sculptures, we were actually quite amazed at the small area they had marked off for the sculpture area.  I was expecting it to be a much larger area.  We do, indeed, have a small coastline, 17 miles of it, but it's all ours and we love it!!!  And it's very scenic - sandy beaches, rugged rocky coastal areas, beautiful homes of all sizes - the New Hampshire coastline is lovely for sure!

Ann

Ann,

Great photos! Thanks for the "tour"

Hi Joan - you're quite welcome!!  The sculptures are still there through tomorrow, if you get a chance to make it to the beach - great to see them in person.

Ann

Those were so neat!  I saw something like this on tv one time...it sure is something to be able to create out of sand...

Hi Sally - these people who are the Master Sand Sculptors are so amazingly talented, you just have to see them in person to see the detail of their work.  Beautiful!

Ann

Hi Karen - thanks for your comments and I'm glad you enjoyed the tour!  These were wonderful to see in person - so much more to these sculptures than I could capture in a picture.

(07/02/07 09:40PM) — David L. Britt, MBA

Ann, these are utterly AMAZING!  I don't see how they are able to keep the sand from falling apart!  I guess that's why we have camera's, so we can make them last!!

Hi David - they were amazing to see them in person.  I watched some of the sculptors, and it was like they were using surgical tools to carve some of the detail in some of these.  They were so precise in their work, and the detail is really phenomenal.

Thanks for reading!
Ann

Ann, I'm glad you brought this to my attention, I'm completely in awe!!!

Hey Diane - it was really something to see in person, and as always, pictures just really never completely convey what you see when you're there. It was fun to be down there and see these sculptors working on each of these works of art. And it was amazing to know that these were just sand and water.....

So glad you found this post!!
Ann
