Destin Florida: Beach Vacation

Destin Florida Beach VacationI just got back from a trip to the beach! It was a wonderful, spur of the moment 500 mile drive down to Destin, Florida. Yep, that's right. We packed up the car, grabbed our two year old, and a stack full of diapers and started driving. (The picture is the view from the Destin condo we stayed at.)

Destin Florida is one of my favorite vacation spots.

I started thinking since I've been there so many times I may be able to offer some advice to people looking to vacation in Destin Florida.

Where to stay in Destin?  Places I have stayed, really enjoyed and would recommend are Silver Beach Towers, Jade East, and Sandestin. There are a lot of other wonderful places as well. These locations have one big thing in common though. They are gulf front locations where you don't even have to put your shoes on to go to the beach. Find Destin Florida Vacation Rentals.

What to eat in Destin? You will definitely not go hungry in Destin. We rent a condo so we have a kitchen where we can prepare breakfast and lunch. Then we usually go out to dinner. We don't like to get dressed up for dinner. We like to go in flip flops and shorts. Here are a few of our favorite spots...

  • The Back Porch (beach front seating)
  • Gratzi Italian Restaurant (really yummy roasted garlic to dip your bread in)
  • Louisiana Lagniappe (covered patio, harbor seating in Sandpiper Cove).
  • Marina Cafe, if you are looking for a nice restaurant (dress up a little) that gets rave reviews.

There are countless other restaurants to choose from. These are just my personal favorites. Find more Destin Florida Restaurants.

What to do in Destin?

  • Go to the Beach (lounge, swim, walk, snooze, read, play...)
  • Splash at the Waterpark (I've never left the beach long enough to try this :)
  • Go Parasailing
  • Visit Henderson Beach State Park
  • Take a drive down 30-A to Seaside (idealic beach town of the Truman Show)
  • Shop at Silver Sands Outlet (or lots of other places)
  • Golf (I don't golf, but it is very popular here)

Seaside is the BOMB!... I used to go to the panhandle a few times a year just to get away..  Some great golf aswell

I love Destin too. I like the seafoodrestaurant close to the peer. Can't remember the name. The grouper was the best I have ever eaten.

Hi Angie - I'm from Florida but have never spent any time in the Destin area.  I love that picture you have in this post, and for those looking to visit your area, you certainly covered alot of great information for them.  What a great local post for your area!

Wow!  You drove from Memphis to FL on the spur of the moment?  I guess when you make your mind up to do something you follow through!!  Nice job with the post, very good info.

Scott, Yes we drove it spur of the moment and with a two year old! It worked out well though and was really fun.

Hmmm, I was wondering where you were! That sounds like a wonderful vacation and spur of the moment is always the best kind.   What a nice peaceful view!

Destin - it's not just the food what comes to my mind but the powdery snowwhite beaches and the turquoise sea - it's not by accident called the "Emerald Coast".  Glad you enjoyed your stay!

Angie:  I just returned from Destin last week.  It was my first trip and I am hooked.  The sugar white and soft sands and the water really is emerald.  Just beautiful and no shortage of great places to eat.  I stayed at the Leeward Keys and it was as close to perfect as you can get.  Captain Dave's is just across the street and really great food.  I can't wait to go again!  The trip inspired a blog of course.   I can see why you took off to this particular destination on the spur of the moment.  It's well worth the drive, isn't it!
