My cousin's family came to our house for the 4th. We haven't been able, over the years to spend much time with her family, so we were really excited. RL got so wound up when I told him they were coming that he just had to leave the office and go for a drive! He found a produce stand with fresh garden things from the Boot Heel of Missouri -- roasting ears and Black Diamond Watermelon.
The guys all had a bonding time sharing hobbies while my cousin and I traded some family heirlooms. The garden was looking good and her daughter found the first red tomato.
Then, before they had to leave for other family obligations, we started a fine, sweaty family tradition that I hope we can keep, maybe long distance, but still keep.
I have had a little Pawlonia seedling since last year. A neighbor had set it and given it to us. I knew it needed to be planted, but just hadn't chosen the place. Man, I had no idea it had grown so much as to completely fill the large pot I had it in.

The mighty rains that have swept other areas in Missouri have been temperate in the Ozarks. We've had plenty, but it is nice to see the greenery happy.

LOVE this tradition.Somehow it feels like the great American Spirit is alive in red, white and blue...and GREEN! =)
It was an accident this time, but I can see this having a 'viral' potential for when we all end up celebrating holidays at a distance.
Some of us could celebrate Labor Day and/or Thanksgiving (depending on our climates) planting fall trees. Or Easter and other spring holidays planting a tree. Then, trade pictures and keep a log for them.
Oh, glory, when will I have time to work!

Tony, That is in line with what we read about them. Our neighbors planted several last summer. I just went to water it. It is watered mostly with a spray bottle on the leaves, taking on more water that way than through roots.
We have a couple older brushy honeysuckles. I rescued more before I found out they are considered a noxious weed by native plant people.
