Portage and Northwest Indiana - Another AR Pro

portage county building

About Porter County / Northwest Indiana

In 1836 Porter County was formed, with Portersville as the original "county seat" or capital of Porter County. In 1837, the Indiana General Assembly changed the name of the county seat to Valparaiso, which is derived from the Spanish term "velo del paraíso", which means "Vale of Paradise".

This name was, no doubt, chosen due to Valparaiso's many lakes and beaches, surrounded by bountiful farm lands.

Porter County is in Northwest Indiana, at the southernmost point of Lake Michigan. Porter County is nicely situated between Indianapolis, Chicago and the Motor City (Detroit, of course). Taking a trip to any of those three major cities is never more than a "day trip" away.

Eleven individual communities are located within Porter County:

Porter County Home Builder - Steve Dalton

Located in beautiful Northwest Indiana, Steve Dalton is a home builder and president of Synergy Homes. The Synergy Homes website is full of useful information, including a page which compares the costs of building a home in Indiana, to the cost of renting. Steve is a David Bach reader and wants to help his clients become "millionaire homeowners"!

In addition to the "official" Synergy Homes website, Steve also maintains a blog, entitled (what else?), the Portage Indiana Home Builder.

Here is a sample from Steve's blog; this snippet is from an article on Down Payment Assistance:

"Right now, it appears that the Federal Government is attempting to shut down the Down Payment Assistance (DPA) business. I guess to be frank, I'd like them to stay out of it, leave it alone. Nehemiah, the largest DPA, would like to see more regulations since that would help them cement their near monopoly on the business.

I disagree and think that the DPA business should be left alone..."

I agree Steve! Read more about Down Payment Assistance in Indiana.

Great recommendation for Porter County Homebuilder. Steve's commitment to assisting first time buyers is rare in this industry.

First let me say thanks to Karen for the recognition and the very thorough write-up on our communities.  I am proud to call Northwest Indiana home, and feel very blessed to have the chance to build brand new homes for my clients.

Paula, we continue to strive to remain committed to first time buyers and all the specific challenges to occur when we are working with the first rung on the housing ladder.  Every day I think I learn something new that I can use to help one of our clients.

Steve-- I'm glad that you liked it.  It actually took me about 45 minutes to write this post; Northwest Indiana is apparently a very beautiful place.  Then again, I knew that, because my husband played tennis in college and Valparaiso was always our "big match."  (Same division; good competitors.)

I hope you noticed all of the useful links I included on this post.  This post is very clearly all about NW Indiana!

Northwest Indiana is a bit of a surprise to some.  In years past we were thought of as blue collar and heavy with the steel mills.  But like a lot of other blue collar areas, like Cleveland, we have matured.  The jobs are more professional and even the steel mills are heavily involved in shoreline refurbishment.

Photos of the Lake Michigan shoreline are indeed awesome.

Thanks for noticing.

I love the ideas that Steve brings to his business.... thanks for sharing

Karen, Steve sounds like an excellent builder. I enjoy following him on activerain network of bloggers for real estate.

I really enjoy how Steve helps make home ownership available for working class families.
