If you live in the Central Indiana Area, specifically Marion County - Indianapolis, IN than you've probably heard all the turmiol over the recent property tax bills. Paula Henry wrote a post Property Taxes in Indianapolis~A Solution and another Lockerbie Square For Sale in Indianapolis regarding the problems and reactions to the recent increases.
Well as many of you've heard, we are to pay the 2006 semi-tax amount. But what is that amount and will we receive a new tax bill? Well there's a few ways to get the 2006 tax amount if you are unable to find last year's bill. One way is to call the Treasurer's Office: 327-444. This office asks that you be understanding. Currently they are receiving a large volume of calls so please be patient. This information is also being posted at the following websites:
city/county website: http://www.indygov.org/
Treasurer's website: www.indygov.org/treas

Now our taxes are due on August 10, 2007 and the fall installment is due on November 13, 2007. In fact, there's a frequently asked questions site at http://cms.indygov.org/mypropertytax/FAQ.aspx that is helpful to answer the common questions regarding this matter.
It is also my understanding that today Governor Mitchell Daniels has ordered reassessments in three more counties. The three counties involved are Gibson, Posey, Delaware Counties.
Proprerty taxes don't just affect home-owners. Significant tax increases will end up affecting renters too. Investors will have to make up the differences in their tax bills which will transfer into monthly rent increases for tenants. Ahh the nightmare that is IN property taxes. You guys are lucky. We haven't even received our bills yet and according to the auditor, we may only receive one bill for the entire amount, which brings up another whole slew of problems.
taxes always frustrate people here - we get the bill in October that is due in November for the tax year of July 1 to June 30 it always confuses people
Cynthia - It is rather confusing...........My clients who are closing have questions Obviously the seller doesn't want to credit more than will be due. he buyer doesn't want to accept less than it will take to pay the taxes. For now, it is a mess.
Real Estate taxes remain to be an issue here in Marion County, Something has to change, I think that means a few people need to be changed as well, in other words, elect someone that knows what to do with our money we pay in taxes. I think it is called, creating a reserve for times like this when it gets tough. Now the politicians want us to go into our reserves and use our savings to pay for their mistakes, I am sick of it personally. WOW, I got that out exactly how I meant it, but now I can at least smile.
