Study shows that American still don't save enoughI read a startling statistic today - 70% of 18 to 20 year olds and 60% of 25 to 34 year olds are not prepared financially in case of an emergency. The study that published these findings was done by Bankrate Inc., and there were plenty shocking numbers in their study. Half of Americans don't have at least three months of savings to cover themselves in case of a financial emergency. This is where they would have to go into credit card debt or dip into their 401K's just to survive. The poll also showed that men are better savers than women. 55% of men were likely to have a three month savings cushion, while 39% percent of women had one. As for interest gained on savings, 61% of men gained three percent or higher, while 49% of women gained that amount. The good news is that Bankrate compared this study to a similar one done last year, and the numbers have improved. I think that most of us could do a lot better, myself included, but I suppose this is why studies like this are performed - to show us where we are and urge us to get better.
