Have you ever driven around in the Valley?  Well then you've probably seen many of the semi-trailors with the name Pollack - these are located all over the place!  What does the name mean?  Well, in this case we are talking about one of the utmost experts with regards to retails centers and strip malls in the metropolitan area.  An article just appeared in the Arizona Republic where Michael Pollack addresses various issues of importance to such strip malls.

He points out that "big-box" stores ala Walmart can steal business from these smaller places.  Though a town may want the tax base improvements that a big-box store will provide, it should strongly consider optimizing the location of said big-box.  He also points out some common no-no's as they relate to strip mall design and construction including

• Don't have too many trees - they hide the stores.
• Don't have an 'inner' layer of stores and an 'outer' layer of stores.  Nobody will be able to see the inner layer!
• Cities should be more lenient with regard to signage - let the businesses advertise!
