A Walk in the Park ~ Like a Step-Back in Time

Brea ~ CA ~ Good Old Brea's City Hall Park is like stepping back in time .

A day in the park can be like step back in time,...maybe a time when we lived in simpler times. Brea's City Hall Park is just one of those places. I love this little park. It continues to be a place for family fun and offers a glimpse of yester-year in our community of Brea.

The park is located on Brea Blvd. in what at one time was considered the heart of the city. In 1929 it was home to the original Civic Center, Brea's Police Station and the jail. The old Police Station continues to stand today as Brea's Museum and home to Brea's Historical Society.

Famous visitors from the past included a future President, Richard M. Nixon who addressed a local audience during a campaign stop in the 1950's.

Looking across the park is Brea's Famous Plunge. How many times have you heard of a public pool referred to as a plunge? The name itself sounds like a flashback in time.

The plunge is one of the oldest continually operated pools in the OC. I took this photo a couple of months ago, it was like a sea of bobbing heads in perpetual motion.

Just beyond the pool is the brightly colored playground equipment. This is about the only area of the park that would remind you we're in the 2000.'s. No doubt it's been updated over the years for the safety of the younger visitors.

The gazebo is home to performances of touring musical groups every summer in a series of summer concerts in the park on Wednesdays. It's a great way to be outdoors enjoying our great summer weather, enjoying an evening picnic, greeting old friends while listening to lively music.

The building on the north side of the park is the former Civic Center itself. It's a Mission Style Art Deco design. Today it's our Scout Center for both the boy and girls. If you have the time, pay a visit to this wonderful place. Just relax and step back in time and remember when it seemed like we lived in simpler times.

Lynda - What a pleasant place to enjoy - you really brought it to life. Reminds me of a favorite park back in Boston.

Jeff

Lynda--City Hall Park in Brea sounds wonderful! What a great spot in Southern California! Thanks for sharing.

Lynda, what a wonderful little spot! It reminds me of when I lived in California back in the 60's.

What a great Localism post.  Yours just keep getting better and better.  It is so nice to visit other parts of the country via Active Rain.

Lynda, You truly do bring your city alive in your posts. I have been showing homes near where I grew up and passed by the pool where my siblings and I learned to swim. Lots of great memories; I can relate to "stepping back in time". We used to walk to this park. They don't make the big parks like this anymore and you sure wouldn't let your children walk there.

Lynda, Wow, so well written I could imagine myself having fun in Brea, Ca.

Jeff ~ Thank you for the nice comment, coming from someone from Boston, a place so rich in history.

Teri ~ Nice to hear from you, thanks.

Joanne ~ T.Y., so you're a former Californian?

Linda ~ So great to hear from you, thank you for the encouragement!

Paula ~ Nice to have those types of memories isn't it, we're now on the next generation of memories here.

Hi Mana ~ Thanks, come for a visit sometime!

Wow; I feel like I just took a lazy walk through this wonderful park, I love to visit historical places when I visit a new area and this would certainly be on my list of places to visit - of course your office would be a scheduled stop too.

Lynda, Thank you for writing such a beautiful post about Brea's City Hall Park.  It was so descriptive and well written that I felt like I was there !  It sounds like a lovely place.

Perhaps you would consider posting it also at the Heritage Properties, Historic Sites and Antiques group due to it's historical nature.....I'd love to see it there for all history buffs to read.

I hope your weekend is going well,

Jo

Thesa ~ So nice hearing from you. I also like historical places, problem is in CA we have so few. Seems like when something's 30 years old they tear it down for new. Our little city park is an exception.

Jo-Anne ~ Thanks so much for the nice words and the suggestion. I wasn't aware of the Heritage Properties group. There are so many it's not easy to keep up with them. Thanks again!

Another great post Lynda!!!  This looks like a great place to be on a sunny day.  They look like they are having BIG FUN in that picture.

Lynda, This looks absolutely idyllic!  What awesome information on Brea!!!

Lynda, Reading your posts makes me want to come visit Brea.  It sounds like a fantastic place!

Lynda - Love this place.  Wonder where else there's still a place called "the plunge"?  Sure takes me back to my childhood.

Lynda - you do such a great job showcasing Brea - thanks for all the great links too!

Oh my gosh, I'm thrilled to see so many of my AR friends, thank you!

Kimberly ~ Thank you so much for the nice visit, I love reading your community of Huntsville! Btw, I about went around my house unplugging things the past couple of days, I was thinking about you!

Chris ~ Thanks so much, we have a really nice litte community here. It was a great place for my kids to grow-up.

Stepanie ~ So nice to hear from you Ms. TX!  if you're visiting CA, I have a place in the OC for you to stay!

Cyndee ~ Thank you for the nice words, especially coming from the Clearwater FL. real estate pro! We could all take a lesson from you!

Lynda,

You describe this park in Brea so well I almost feel like I am there in Orange County with you!  I love historical buildings and it is nice to see pictures of these in Brea and to hear they are still being used.

Hi Rita ~  Thanks so much for the visit and nice comments. I missed this previously.
