Hyer-Kansas School for the Deaf Connection - Olathe Kansas Celebrates 150 Years

Olathe Kansas is Celebrating it's 150th Birthday with the Hyer-Kansas School for the Deaf Connection Boot KSDSculpture.

This boot sculpture is provided by O'Donnell and Sons and stands in front of the Olathe-Kansas School for the Deaf connection which began in 1866. C.H. Hyer, maker of the first true cowboy boot, taught shoe and harness making at the Kansas School for the Deaf (KSD) for six years. Mr. Hyer employed many deaf workers at Olathe Boot Company until C.H. Hyer and Sons, Inc. closed in 1978.

"KSD is the oldest state educational institution in the State of Kansas. The School was founded by Philip A. Emery, a deaf man who had been a teacher at the Indiana School for the Deaf from 1854 to 1860. Emery had come to Kansas to start a new life and a new occupation; but he was persuaded by J.R. Kennedy, one of the early Kansas settlers, to educate Kennedy's three deaf children. Emery located a small house with two rooms and an attic in Baldwin City that could be rented for five dollars per month. On December 9, 1861, the Kansas State School for the Deaf opened its doors to the first student, Elizabeth Studebaker from Clinton, a niece of the famous Studebaker wagon manufacturer."

KSD is a placement option available to all deaf children in Kansas ages 3-21. To learn more about the history of the Kansas School for the Deaf go to their web site.

David - Thanks for sharing, that institution is certainly a landmark.  I love the boot a fitting tribute to C H Hyer company whose contribution to the school was significant.

Jennifer, Thank you for visiting and commenting.  Seeing students and people in the community with this disability really makes you appreciate what you have.  I'm grateful for my sight and hearing!  I think the School for the Deaf really is an asset to the community!
