So we all know about Hurricane Flossie, but as we were sitting there watching the reports, getting prepared, ( ok just relaxing - long day at the beach) My chair starts shifting to the right, then to the left, then back to the right - EARTHQUAKE - Nothing like the two 6.+ earthquakes we had back in October - but still exciting!
Back to Flossie - Still another reason the Island should be split into 2 different counties, all the decisions are made in Hilo, including what happens in Kona, (That is a whole nother story - let me know if you would like a blog about that) So the Hurricane is supposed to be about 100 miles off of the southern point of the big island, later this afternoon - SO WHY ARE KONA SCHOOLS CLOSED ??? It is a beautiful day out right now 7:30 am, should be most of the day - should rain late today - long after school lets out, But the Mayor has sen fit to effectively shut down the entire island. With all the Schools closed, - parents have no place to send there children, making most of us take the day off - WHY ??? Another bad decision for Kona - Made in Hilo!
Its time to make lemonade out of lemons - my son and i are going to the park - kick around the soccer ball some - maybe do some snorkeling at Kahaluu Beach. Maybe I should be thanking the Mayor?
Have a great day

Lance - very interesting the local politics... is there any (I hate to use the word...) REAL (or how about serious) talk about splitting the island into two counties?
How did the island fare with Flossie?
Aloha Debi
It seems that most people on the Kona side would like to see it split, The problem is that Hilo will never let that happen. Even though Kona side is about 1/3 the population, it produces 2/3 of the states income, mostly from all the Hotel taxes and much higher property Values (taxes) on our side - I don't think they will ever give up that revenue. Its sad, when you drive over to Hilo - the roads are so much nicer, wider, infrastructure is twice what it is in Kona, You actually see the difference as you cross the city lines.
I guess we will have to live with it until our population surpasses Hilo's - then we can vote on it :)
