Keeping current with color trends. What's hot.

Could we be saying goodbye to the Brown / Teal color pallet? I really do love this color combo but it may very well be on its way out. I just received the latest Pottery Barn and Touch of Catalogs in the mail today. I think the cover photos will speak for themselves:

I think that once a particular color combination hits the major chain and discount stores it is on its way out.

To the left you will see how the beautiful Teal / Brown combo has been murdered.

I'd like you all to pause for a moment of silence and remember when T/B was fashionable, clean and elegant.

On our right is the new fall look, Reds are back in. Clean lines and casual elegance rule.

Take a moment to appreciate the classic beauty of... RED.

TOUCH OF CLASS CATALOG FALL 2007 POTTERY BARN CATALOG FALL 2007

As far as I'm concerned it is a good thing. I love red, it is such a passionate, dramatic color. Red accents will always make a home look more inviting. And red is a photographer's dream adding a punch to dreary MLS photos.

Red, old friend, welcome back.

Wow Maureen,

Thanks for posting this.  The brown and teal has been and still is one of my favorite color combinations.  I love the way the red is used in that photo.  Yes Welcome back red!!  I use this alot of accents too.

~Kimberly~

Hi Maureen,

Thank you for this post!  I LOVE red and have so many red items in my staging inventory so happy to hear this!   I am preparing to do a home in red, olive green and browns.  I do love the brown & teal combo yet glad to "fall back" on my best color buddy - RED!

I love both Maureen, and yes the teal/brown bedroom set was murdered.  I think people might call that "opulent" I call it tacky.  Thanks for the information.  I do need to add red to my inventory.  I've avoided it because it can be hard to use in an occupied house.

Maureen, I love that Brown and Teal - actually it is part of my logo!  AWWW man!!  Did you get my email- Please help me buddy!  I need your tech support?

I still think you will see various shades of light blue/teal...but with broader lines and less busyness.  I have seen the variation change to a much darker coffee bean and lighter blues (I call it Tiffany Blue actually).

Yes, I too noticed the great shades of red....the good red, in the latest PB catalogue!  I am a dark coffee-bean-brown color junkie....not a big fan of black as much (a little too 90s in spots) and have used dark brown as my rich staple....so much works with it and it can be comtemporary, warm or cool...always fresh and updated!!  Dark coffee bean combined with a creamy white/light ivory, browns with the reds, dark oranges, certain shades of green, variations of fuscia........I love the red though!! SO strong!  Thanks!  Regards-Kathleen

PS-The shade of blue in the photo would not be the best combo of those two colors....tacky is right and the shade of blue is off!!

Amen to that! I love red. I use it in my home (whether it is in or "out"), my staged properties, my dog's collar, and my clothes. I don't go overboard, but any chance I get, I use it.

Never was really into the whole Brown/Teal thing. I love Brown but not with Teal I think it was a bit overdone. Glad to see that it s done! Now I love Red. The future looks good to me

Ahhhh.  My master bedroom is currently T/B, and my master suite in my last house was Red.  I'm not sure if I'm ahead or behind!  I guess all in moderation, huh?

Susan

I always try to use red, it don't think it really ever goes out of style.  It is easy enough to make a shift to red / brown / cream combo.

I love red -- still love the taupes.  Still have some teal in my own home.  Have eliminated them everywhere but the Great room.  Hoping the reds stay for a long time!  Good post, my friend.

LOVE..LOVE...LOVE RED!!!!!  I use it all the time so its cool that its "in" for Fall.  Gotta love all those Fall colors of red, brown, orange, and golds...i'm looking forward to staging with these colors! It'll be easier to find these colors in the stores when buying accessories.

It's really out huh?...the brown and teal?  I guess it goes into the Mauve of Fame along with mauve, hunter green & burgundy, peach and blue....am I missing any others? LOL!!

I think you can use any color combination if it is tasteful and suits the house.  The problem with the first set is that it only has a 'touch of class' when there should be class all over it!  ;)

'langsat' - pronounce 'long-sat' - what happened to the the hous where they used this bedding.

Kimberly - that's a good one.

Teresa - there is a theory that when anything hits the bargain stores it is on its way out.  I would not say it is out as in dated, but I think T/B has hit the pinnacle and is on the way down.

While I enjoyed looking at the brown and teal pallette, I avoided jumping into it with too much of my inventory due to the long grey rainy winters we have here. Reds are a much safer bet and help keep the spirits up!

Great topic Maureen! I wouldn't pull the plug on teal and brown just yet. Adding a little mossy green to the combo can extend the shelf life and I think the teal has really morphed into a cleaner blue.  I have no red in my own home but I love to stage with it. It's an easy way to punch up a room.

Kashin= as in "I want to bekashin those checks.

*tear* for blue-brown (I know Juliet will agree with me on this). I just LOVE that color combo. But I also like that brick red on the right. It's beautiful.

Cheers,

Cindy

Maureen Henry, the first to say that red is here ;)  I love red too!

Maureen, I did not know red was out! glad itis back in , it's a very popular color for bed dressings in our area.

Maureen -- What would we do without you to keep us informed of the latest trends in both color and technology!!!  I hope we never have to find out!  I love the brick red!

Ginger - I don't think red ever really goes out - it is timeless.

Maureen - don't ever leave us...promise?

I have some fun tidbits to add to your RED phenomenon : Red and orange is fire energy and lots of fire energy in a home encourages lots of changes in the lives of those who live there (or will live there). Fire energy helps people expand, open up to new ideas and ways of being. It gives people the push to share their gifts with the world.

Interestingly good stuff!

PS: I deleted my recent posts widget and don't remember how I got it in the first place. Do you remember since you have one on the right?

Here in Minnesota with our cold winters,

we use the warm colors for the cold months for sure.

In my own Master bedroom I use a  slightly greened blue for the warm months  with cream and white accents, switch in some red accents for fall, and end up with red  with gold accents for the Holidays - yes, I am weird.  I have  different dishes in the kitchen for different seasons also., not the printed on Christmas kind but seasonal colors.

Kathleen - my mom always did that when I was a kid.  It was really nice.  She had crazy 70's floral slip covers for the winter, she changed out all the accessories and draperies also.  It was a ton of work.  Not one of the family traditions that I kept, but it really was like getting a new room every 6mo.

My daughter actually did the opposite. Her bedroom looked like the red one on the right. She just updated to the old one on the left - which looks great.

Here is the good thing...she gave me her old, THE NEW RED, bedding ensemble to ME!!!

Phyllis Pafumi

Phyllis - It really is such a nice color combo.   Worked out well for you.  ;)

Wait - red M&M's are back????   That's great!!!! Now I wish they would get rid of blue.

Nora - thanks!  I definitely have not been giving out enough cookies lately,  I'll get on it.

Thanks Maureen for bringing this up. While it is mainstream, chocolate and blue is still one of the strongest color palattes going forward with Designers. Having just recently shopped the New York Gift Show, the newest collections of furniture, table top and accessories are showcasing this color palatte. The emphasis on what is natural and "green" is exploding as we become more and more conscious of our environment, this being said, thankfully, blue and brown will remain huge as well as well, Green.

Red is perhaps my biggest go to color, staging or not.  But, I had some red sueded placemats from Pier One that I needed a couple more of, and when I stopped in a couple months ago, the clerk told me that they didn't have those anymore, that now they have orange ones.  So, I said, "So, red is out, and orange is in?"  She said, "Yes."  I said @#$% and worse!  I have a ton of red stuff!  Also I had recently had my dining room painted red above the chair rail.  I got quite depressed really.

Therefore, your post Maureen, is a VERY WELCOME SIGH OF RELIEF for me!  Thank you, thank you, thank you :)))  I hated to say I would just have to be out of date, 'cause I wasn't abandoning my red for anything.  And now I keep it and be cool!!!   I mean, how can red go out of style?  It's such a neutral in that it goes with most anything.  I am so happy.

Maureen - You're so right... when it hits the discount stores, consider it O-U-T.  I remember that happening with palm trees.  They were so in for a while and then everyone had them.

I too love the red and especially like the look of the bedding and how they have it displayed.  Thanks for sharing!

Kathy

Not to stress out Patricia - red will be back in by Christmas, for sure.

You can just whip up a valence out of those  placemats or maybe a hat to wear while staging or  -----was that already a "society" symbol.

cupu-assu  I am not even going to comment on that one!!!

I strive to not follow the clothing color trends (ie, blue and khaki, black and gray). I've always figured more sophisticated things could be done. Thanks for the reminder about other parts of life. =).

Red is interesting. So many are afraid of using a strong color like that.

Hi Maureen - Red is hot now.  Color trends are fascinating.  After 9/11 the serenity of b/t helped with healing.  Red wakes up the serenity and shows assertiveness.  Looks great.  Keep an eye out for what comes next.  Thanks for sharing.

I love colors,,,,most colors and am thrilled every part of life doent have to be a neutral. I would probably die. Now it makes me want to paint a wall a bright color in my bedroom!
