Protect Salt Lake City's water resourcesI just received a neat little 2007 Consumer Confidence Report pamphlet in the mail entitled "Drink Up! Your Water's Safe." It was sent by the Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities and its focus is on Salt Lake's water supply and how we can keep it clean and plentiful. For such a simple subjects as water, there were a lot of things in the report that I didn't know about. For example, pharmaceutical waste being flushed down the toilet is harming our water supply. There are drop boxes for unwanted or unusable drugs at the Pioneer Police District, 1040 W. 700 S. and at the Public Safety Complex, 315 E. 200 S. All collected materials are incinerated. Chemicals being dumped on the ground also pose a risk to our water supply, but there are places where we can take them to dispose of them safely. The Salt Lake Valley Solid Waste Management Facility has a permanent household hazardous waste disposal center at 6030 W. California Ave. There is also a local collection at the Jordan Park on the fourth Thursday of each month April through September, at 1100 S. 900 W., 7:00am to 10:00am. And the last is a website for the watershed protection program which is worth taking a look at. www.keepitpure.com
