Birmingham Alabama, well the whole state, has been in drought conditions this summer. This week though we have had some much needed rain and I think everyone is grateful and has enjoyed it quite a bit. Some of us, like our friend over here, have just wanted to sit out in it and enjoy some time in the rain. Can you tell he is big fan. (I know a bad pun, but it works so well.)
While Birmingham Alabama state totals for the year are still low, we have enjoyed more than 3 1/2 inches of rain this week (that's out of 4 3/4 inches we have had total for the month of August) and a much needed break in temperature away from the hot and steamy 100+ degree days we were having for a while. The average temperature this week in Birmingham has only been about 87 degrees while the rest of the months average was just about 100.
Hopefully we can gain back some of the 17+ inches we are still behind in Alabama, so we can drop all of our drought warnings, alerts, and restrictions. For now though, we are going to enjoy the puddles while they last.
I found some interesting statistics about Birmingham Alabama weather. Here you can find average temperatures, rainfall, humidity, and cloudiness month by month. It has the same information for cities across the country on the site. You can also find weather forecasts at AccuWeather and Weather.com.
Here's to getting your feet wet!

Austin recently went through one of the worst droughts in over 40 years. It made it really hard to sell lake front real estate since the lake was incredibly low.
Ki - There are some areas close by Birmingham going through the same thing. Unfortunately the rains haven't helped them much. We have actually been told to be careful on boats during the Labor Day weekend becasue of potential damage.
Sounds like you had a much needed weather reprieve this week!
Ginger - we did have a nice reprieve, a predictable one as well. Almost every single rain came in the afternoon. I know because I got caught in them every day.
Stephen, I am glad you finally got some rain. I hope more is on its way for you - but in a moderated form. Some of the flooding that is going on in other parts is awful as well.
Steve.. I agree, some of the flooding going on in other parts of the US and, well, around the world, is terrible. We will gladly take it in a moderated catch up over some time and not all at once.
Wow Stephen, with all of the drought isn't it nice to hang out in the ActiveRain. I guess the outside vendors, Poland Spring and ice cream guys made a mint this summer. Praying for lush rain and green lawns in Alabama. Enjoy your weekend.
Toni, Active Rain has been a great place to get my feet wet this summer on all these dry days in Birmingham. I am sure ice cream guys have done very well here. I kept one here in business this summer by myself I am sure. (I actually wrote a blog about the place Clumpies Ice Cream Company)
