I'm Locked in a TIME MACHINE: Back to the PAST---

I have been putting this post off because I have SO many lovely pictures and it would take forever to show them...while I have left a ton out, I'm going to let the pictures tell the story and may put it into several parts so I can show you the best of them (and you don't get bored).

Just before my daughter returned to college, we were looking for something to do one day. We were both tired and wanted something that would be a short trip and wouldn't take much time. I thought about Old Bethpage Village Restoration on Long Island in New York, a 19th Century Village that we haven't visited since the children were small. It's in the very next town to Farmingdale and we thought we'd spend an hour there. We thought wrong! Although it was a weekend and many events weren't going on, it was a WONDERFUL day and we didn't want to miss any of it. Our one hour hour trip turned into four and we enjoyed every single second of it, especially the end which has quite a story to go with it.

Here are some snapshots of life from the 19th Century located in Old Bethpage, Long Island, New York. They are having special festivities for Labor Day and if you're close by, you would certainly enjoy a day there. Young or old, I can't think of a better way to spend a day!

Feng Shui Long IslandJust a short trip, we had no idea what the day held!

Feng Shui Long Island, New York CityA shot of the inside of the Exhibit, showing items that were used in the 19th Century.

Feng Shui Long Island, New York CityEmpty now, they are going to be playing some old time baseball all weekend long and on weekends.

Old Bethpage Village RestorationAre we having fun yet? Absolutely!

Feng Shui Old BethpageHand-carving, a lost art...

Feng Shui Farmingdale, Long IslandThe finished product. If they were for sale, I probably would have bought them :)

Feng Shui New York CityOld time Shaker Style buildings, they are all original homes, schools and churches.

Feng Shui BethpageIn Classic costumes of what they wore "back in the day," they were taking a break on one VERY hot day.

Long Island Feng ShuiNo TV, no radios, NO COMPUTERS! That means no Activerain :( How DID they get by?

Long Island Feng Shui, Town of Oyster BayThey went to bed VERY early. Notice the pot by the bed....no plumbing.

Long Island Feng Shui, Oyster BayDowsing, in this case for water. Dowsing is still used today in Feng Shui for Geopathic Stress in the land and I've even seen it used on a map to help locate missing children.

Feng Shui Oyster BayA blacksmith. In addition to horseshoes, they made iron objects to ward off witches and were found on every door back then.

These are about 1/2 the pictures, I think since I loved the day so much I took so many....but I left so many OUT. I will post a part two tomorrow with a story of a wonderful man we met at the very end of our day at the last place to see---The Cemetery. He had some interesting stories......

Old Betpage Village Restoration is located in the town of Oyster Bay and is a wonderful way to experience the past. Special Labor Day activities are going on all weekend, though any time is a great time to visit!

Carole, we really have some great places in Long Island.  Maybe I'll "head west" over the weekend!

Carole , this would be a wonderful post at the Heritage Properties, Historic Sites and Antiques group, I hope you'll post it there....I would like to feature it !

Thanks so much for sharing your day with this lovely post...the pictures tell a million stories and it looks like just the kind of place I could spend days and days and days.....

Jo

These are really cool pictures, I look forward to seeing the other ones.

Laurie, Thank you for your comment.  If you're headed out this way, call me.  I would love to meet you finally!

Jo, Thank you!  I'm so sorry, I forgot about your other group (again:(  I will post it there.  I have been meaning to get this post up for awhile and I wanted to do it before this weekend when they have so many activities.

Linda, I liked the pictures too and there are still more.  I left so many out but it was a really fun and interesting place to visit.  Thank you for your comment.

Wonderful pictures Carole...I love visiting historical places! I didn't know there was a Shaker Colony out that  way!

Lovely presentation...I love it when you put pictures...it sure makes a post have some color and keeps interest....as well as points out different areas as if I were there walking right through it!  Thank you for sharing and will look forward to more! (you said you had some more pictures with stories?)

Carole - I guess one good turn deserves another.  Yesterday, my post brought you back to your time in the Catskills and today your post brings me back to one of my favorite class trips that I took when I was in school.  Of course, today, I would probably have more of an appreciation for the whole experience.  Back then, my memories were of seeing the animals and getting a birch beer and pretzel with the coupons that they gave us and buying those hard candy sticks.  I've mentioned going there with the family, but for one reason or another we usually don't end up there.  Maybe we will soon.  Thanks for bringing back the memories.

Joan, It is like a litte restored Town, they have done wonders since I was there many years ago!  It is the type of thing you would love. Thank you for your comment and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Sally, Thank you so much, I love your pictures as well.  I have never been to Hawaii and have heard so much about it and when I see your pictures I can feel like I'm there!  I do try to post pictures when I can, they can say more then words.  I wish you a terrific weekend and pat Shadow for me.

Adam, Thank you for your lovely comment.  I haven't been there for many years and it's true, I enjoyed it much more this time then I did years ago.  My daughter loved it as well---but be prepared:  you just can't see it in an hour, there's so much to see.  Plan on spending the day!  I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Great stuff, Carole!  My parents got me hooked on restoration and historical preservation from the time we were very young--we dragged through Jamestown, Williamsburg, Old Sturbridge Village, Salem, Gettysburg--you name it, I've probably been there, but now I have so much more of an understanding of our country's history as a result.  Thanks for posting this!

She's running and skipping and hopping...it's so nice to have her back. My husband keeps saying all she needed was a haircut...not drugs..haha.

Carole - Awwwww this really hits home.  I lived in Bethpage the first two years of my life before moving to Huntington.  Now in CA I miss good old L.I.  I am going to be sure to visit with my family the next time I am in NY.  Thanks for sharing.

Carole.... Some nice pictures. The blacksmiths always amazed me, on what they could make. Forming steel into objects. What a unique art, especially those that made different types of swords. There must be some very interesting history behind the different types of blacksmiths.  thanks for sharing this and looking forward to part 2.

Loretta, I have been to many of those places:  Old Sturbridge Village (I loved that), Salem and Jamestown. The next post has a part in it about Gettysburg....Funny that I have never wanted to go there and now I know why!   Thanks for stopping by and sharing and have a wonderful weekend!

Sally, I KNEW it and I'm so glad.  My dogs used to prance around for a few days, they knew they looked great and they were so proud. I'm glad she's better!  I wish you a wonderful weekend.

Janice, I didn't know you lived so close, I grew up in Wantagh.  As much as I complain about the price of living here, I really do love Long Island.  Stop and visit me when you come to New York!  And have a great weekend.

Jeff, He amazed me too.  He had to move so fast he apologized for not being able to stop to let me take a photo.  He was making a Swirly thing that was used back then to ward off witches, it was pretty interesting. Thanks for your comment and enjoy your weekend.
