Did You Know? - A Washington Community College Can Award Some High School Seniors a 2 Year Degree!

Did You Know it is Possible for a Washington High School Student
to Graduate BOTH from High School and Receive an AA Degree?!

As a real estate agent many prospective home-buying parents from out of state have asked me about the public K-12 schools in my area.  I readily admit I'm not an expert on all the public schools in this area and cannot offer an opinion one way or another.  However, I can and do offer the links below to the school districts themselves.

One important program that is available to qualifying High School Juniors and Seniors, and perhaps not clearly covered in the links below, is the program the Washington State Legislature enabled in 1992 called Running Start.  This program allows certain qualifying Juniors and Seniors to take some or all of their classes at the local community college and earn both High School and College Level credit (100 level and above).

Clark Community College serves Vancouver, Camas, Felida and many other communities in Southwest Washington.  Clark also accommodates area High School Juniors and Seniors that qualify for the Running Start Program.

Each year the Clark College Running Start program graduates a good number of students that receive both their High School Diploma, and an Associates (2-year) Degree from Clark.  Many more students come close to earning their 2-year degree, and end up with College Level credits they can build on next year at Clark or, take with them to another College or University.  It has been typical practice in Washington where an AA degree from Clark would allow a student to matriculate to the University of Washington, or Washington State University as a Junior.  In other words, you could potentially get a running start on your first two years of college!

As an example, young B enrolled in Running Start as a high school Junior.  Transportation had to be arranged differently, and the college Books had to be paid for otherwise, the State paid for the tuition.  At graduation time, the AA was awarded and B could have gone to the UW as a Junior.  What a huge savings for B and the family.

If you are at all interested in the Running Start program, please review the program with Clark College, and check with the local High School to ensure they support the program as well.
