I have just finished my second reading of Fragile Giants A Natural History of the Loess Hills by Cornelia F. Mutel. Mutel is a historian of science and engineering at the University of Iowa. Originally pushished in 1989 this book was the first book to chronicle the natural history of the Loess Hills and one of the very few books about the Loess Hills. Considered the original and the first book to begin unlocking the mysteries of the Loess Hills I wanted to write about this book because I found it to be incredibly informative.
If you are interested in learning about the history, inhabitants, plant spieces, animal species and future of the Loess Hills I recommend this book. You'll see the Loess Hills in a whole new light and be able to understand why they are referred to as the "Fragile Giants"
You can find a copy of the book at Amazon.com, bookstores along with many Loess Hills locations around Western Iowa.
